I believe the overarching challenge is the result of a "perfect storm" of sorts and that it probably went beyond what the Devs intended. I think it is fair to say that they were targeting certain player activities that were considered to represent exploits such as wheelbarrowing (and others).

The addition of NPCs
This makes running and bicycling a far riskier solution, especially because there is a delay to exit the bicycle - during which time the NPCs have opportunity to erase you from the map. This is especially troubling because you do not always have much time to react to NPC spawns.

Requirement to run or jog
Running into a POI is not a smart move these days - walking and crouching are the new reality. CON is not increased while doing so. This puts players into a tougher position when it comes to maintaining CON.

Over encumbered mechanic
The addition of this mechanic, tied to fainting and potential health loss, presents significant challenges to raising STR and CON using many currently-acceptable (post 1.0) mechanics. It used to be that movement speed was reduced as weight increased; however, with fainting in the mix and the addition of NPCs, it can be a deadly combination.

Wetness
The issues with wetness and drying clothes compounds everything because of the associated weight gain (potentially leading to becoming over encumbered). The length of time needed to dry clothing reduces CON. Constantly carrying a raincoat in your inventory leads to less inventory space and wearing it can cause hyperthermia in hot climates.

Daily CON loss and gain rate
The rate of daily CON loss versus gain seem to be off, meaning that CON seems easier to lose and more challenging to recover. This is probably more impactful than many realise; a lack of visible progress tends to lead rapidly to frustration and abandonment of a game.

CON loss effects
Running skill, endurance, and other important elements (infection, revulsion) can be negatively impacted as CON falls, meaning that regaining CON can become more and more challenging (and important!) over time - and this is a feedback loop of sorts that needs to be carefully considered by the Devs. If you can not run or recover stamina at a reasonable rate you are far more likely to die.

No alternatives
The lack of an approved alternative to build CON and STR alongside a lack of server settings to adjust and balance the need for continuous movement means that activities such as conversations, role play, base building, using vehicles, enjoying a sunset, holding server gathering events, become negatives rather than positives. SCUM should have fun elements and I would argue that what exists today reduces opportunities for "fun in SCUM".

Player progression
In todays world, people are less interested in spending months to develop their characters. It is an exceptionally long grind that requires constant work and everything can be lost in an instant if a hard wipe is necessary for the game to continue evolving. With the spectre of possible future hard wipes still out there, one would think that players have less incentive to spend extensive time building their characters. From what I am hearing from my own squad, it is a real issue.




There is a lot to contemplate here and I am certain that it is on the Devs minds these days. It might take a while to get this balanced. Unless this is adressed, I honestly fear what will happen in the future - perhaps the near future - to SCUM.
