When you say "game designer" I assume that you're referring to designers of this game, not other games. I genuinely don't think that's the case, and I think it's a bit unfair to boot. If they truly wanted to sanitize this game, and had no regard for maintaining the original vision, then they would have removed far more than the absolute, bare minimum that was required for the console release. With all the noise, it's easy to overlook the fact that the game is still filled to the brim with incredibly dark stuff that no other devs would dare to touch.

I don't think they want to deliberately sanitise the game and would agree to that being an unfair assessment of the mindset at VOID. I think it is fair to say that, seeing as there is apparently a fine line between what is acceptable for a game on consoles and what is not, there is a risk of future content being censored (albeit subconsciously) to avoid further conflicts with console regulators. Only time will tell I guess.

Templates no, automation yes - as part of the base game. Don't use automation, it makes your planets the same as AI planets. Hotkeys are also a thing in the base game, as far as I'm aware, though I've never wanted or needed to use them myself. Maybe someone else can help in that regard.

Starbases have been regularly stated by the developers as having so much spaghetti code at this point that they are scared to touch them - it's a nightmare trying to change anything. I agree that tearing out most of the code to replace it with something more workable would be fantastic, but I simply don't see it happening.
