IMO they should change up how they label civs. They should have "French" as the overarching culture and rename French civ to Kingdom of France, so Kingdom of France + KT + JD are all French "variants" of eachother.
Then we could potentially have "Scandinavians" or "Norse" and have Danes Swedes and Norwegians, all Norse "variants" of eachother.
I agree with you though, Spanish Portuguese and Aztecs should be added asap.
(Although if anyone wants to talk about Vikings fitting in the timeline, we should also talk about Aztecs with cotton armour and rocks glued to sticks lol.)

I do not think that the time period will go back earlier than 9th century (800s) on AoE IV, but Norse or Scandinavians do have potential for getting added eventually. AoE IV could potentially overlap most of AoE II: DE's time period, except for 8th century (700s) and earlier. The timeline intended for AoE IV if I am not mistaken has never been specified, but I would not be surprised if the 3K civilizations, Huns, Goths, Celts, and Romans will never get added to AoE IV.

Another reason for doing this is also because it would not overlap the time period for AoE: DE contrary to AoE II: DE. Even if the timeline were to be pushed back a little further than I thought I think that the time period limit would be 7th century at the very earliest. If the Aztecs do officially get added to AoE IV I think that it is possible they might be the only Native American civilization that ever gets officially added to this game meaning no Inca or Maya, but contrary to AoE II: DE I am not certain if they ever will get a campaign.
The timeline is approximately 700-1550, maybe more like 800-1600. The way things are in AoE4 with how unique each civ is and how much it costs to develop they for sure will never go earlier than that and we will never see Romans and Huns.

"Viking era" was 750-1066, Kalmar union 1397-1523, so some kind of Scandinavian civ definitely works timeline-wise just maybe not a real "empire" like the other civs.
Still, makes more sense than Aztec with their cotton armour and stone weapons, and I still want to see Aztecs in the game.
Gameplay > everything being a historical simulation.
