The "problem" is that you have control over the camera.

If it was static Isometric (like Project zomboid for example), you would have accepted it, since that is how you see the world.

But now you got this tiny bit of control and it is just not enough when you use it to look at something.

At least that is my theory.

The devs are very clear in 2 things:

1- They will NOT change it ever. (Their vision, their game, and good that they stick to what they want in stead of catering to all demands)

2- they do advice against modding AT THIS STAGE.

That said:
There is a mod out there that gives you full control over the camera.
It is on Nexus atm.

Mind you that:

-The game is EA and in development, so every single update might ruin your save or mess with a mod.
-The game is NOT made for 3rd person view and you will notice: You can use the camera freely, but when you think about playing as if it is a 3r person game, it will stutter: this is due to the rendering/loading of stuff that you can see (but are not ment to be yet).

once the game releases in version 1.0 they promised that they will also open up mod support:
From then on mods will be a lot saver.

I use the MOD since almost day one and have no problems with it AT ALL.
No crashes, no nothing.
It does stutter a little bit when you use it as a 3rd person cam, but other than that it is verty stable.

Use at your own risk and, as always, do not complain about the game when something goes wrong with the mod ofcourse: own responsibility.

Just had the last suspect on one of the hardest missions get the 'can't be arrested' glitch while finishing up my S-rank playthrough. Have also had runs end all the way at the end because my teammates all just stand still in the opposite direction of the shooter. Wouldn't recommend it.

FYI, by default the '0' key for free cam mode is not assigned to numpad section of the keyboard. Instead it's binding on the main numeric keys, the same rows of other camera mode toggles (1-9).
