Ughh this digital ownership ♥♥♥♥ again.

You CANNOT own digital goods by definition. They are not an item made of matter, they are an infinitely reproducible pattern of data. Ownership of something infinitely reproducible is an impossibility, even by its "legal" owners, because they can be copied ad infinitum. Sure they can TRY to limit that through methods like DRM, but they will always be in vain. There WILL be a bypass eventually. (And Baldur's Gate 3 doesn't have DRM at all, so this doesn't even apply here)

You never "owned" digital goods, and you never will; not through Steam, not through itch.io, not through GOG, not even via ripping physical media; you were allowed to obtain the data from a source, and that data is now stored on your computer until its deletion. This isn't even necessarily a bad thing, either; its infinite reproducability means so long as you have at least one copy of the data, you can never lose it. Unlike physical media, which is permanently lost upon the destruction of its physical storage medium, digital media can be stored on as many physical storage mediums that can fit it and that you can get your hands on.

Digital goods not being "owned" is not a huge violation of consumer rights as people like to make it out to be; it's fundamentally a completely different method of "ownership" than what we've come to know with physical objects. Not understanding that leads to reactionary anti-progressivism and misinformation* like this
Oprindeligt skrevet af Caerimonia:
Ubisoft revoked the license for one of its games and it became unplayable, so no part of the controversy is paranoia. The plug can be pulled.

I'm actually moving away from videogames and into board and tabletop games. And books of course. Software is the most anticonsumer product ever made.
that never ends up helping anyone. "Ownership" isn't the great savior of consumer rights people make it out to be; DRM (or, lack thereof) is. Only via DRM-free games (or functionally DRM-free, as what Steam offers) can you "own" digital products in any meaningful sense of the word.

*This person is referring to The Crew, a game that required an online connection at all times, including for singleplayer content. They are then extrapolating this to mean all digital singleplayer games can just reject you and not be playable at any time. This is misinformation; the vast majority of singleplayer games sold on modern PC storefronts can be played immediately and forever after installation without ever being validated online once. The Crew is not an example of why digital media is bad, physical media would behave the same; it's an example of why DRM is bad.

By the way, you can ignore EULAs. It's a thing you can do. Most people do just that. Remain aware of them of course, but you're hardly bound to obey them.
