Thank you for the correction, I have corrected the post. I looked at the effect one time and saw the re-load rate was 37. I mistakenly thought the samurai had a Core Re-loading Skill of 30 (it's 20) and forgot that the unit had gained one level of experience (+2), so I miscalculated the effect as +7. I thought it was a strange number for a bonus at the time but didn't double check it - so thanks for that.

This is what I mean about deploying your army to protect and support the matchlock units. I would never place matchlock units where they can be directly closed down, either protected by impassable terrain, impassable bamboo screen or (semi-impassable) defensive line unit.

The matchlock unit will remain in position all battle (unless I am completely over-run) auto-targeting anything that comes within its field of fire, cycling through its fire by rank until the battle is over or it's out of ammunition (has occurred in a river crossing defence against 4 full stacks).

I have never recruited a matchlock samurai. If I did, I would probably do the same in terms of armour and accuracy. A starting accuracy of 50 and max experience gets them to 68, which is close enough to the level of 80 beyond which incremental increases are worthless. Armour or melee would be more useful - if you are going to use the unit in the way you do, in the front-line and have it engage in melee.

For matchlock ashigaru, which I don't want engaging in melee, (if they are the battle is likely already lost), then armour is of little utility. +20 accuracy from province speciality gets them the same accuracy as starting matchlock samurai and is, for my money, their best upgrade.

You actually take matchlock monks for accuracy and I would say in this case is probably a wise idea to upgrade accuracy, because their ability really blows compared to the reload ability, they need serious ranks before they are able to get two volley's off before getting charged. You may as well try and go all in on the accuracy + increased range and wait on them ranks.

Another unit I have never recruited. Can you explain why you think they need serious ranks to get two volleys off (in the way you use them), but the matchlock samurai doesn't. The matchlock monk has a re-load rate of 30 compared to the matchlock samurai at 20. Something doesn't compute here, the monks should re-load 2 seconds faster than the samurai.

I would have thought that, if using the monks the same way as you use the samurai, then giving them a combination of armour and melee, to give them parity with a base level samurai would make more sense. You would then have a monk that had the melee capability and armour protection of the samurai but with higher accuracy and re-load rate.

Re-load rate only matters if you use matchlocks the way you choose to use them. If you have a protected unit that is going to be firing all through the battle, the rate of fire is not important. It also goes without saying, (though I'll now say it anyway), that the cost benefit is that there will be two matchlock ashigaru units firing for every one matchlock samurai, inflicting casualties and morale shock on twice the number of enemy units :)
