The thing that makes EDH work is it was a player made format with the goal of giving lesser or never used cards a chance to be used as well as slower more casually friendly 3+ player games. I think in the context of a fan made format, something multiplayer like that could work in yugioh but it would have to be designed with a goal in mind and adapted for the kind of game yugioh is. Just trying to shoehorn in what EDH does for magic will never work for yugioh.

There are really several good options for early game defenses. Mostly a matter of preference, what your map looks like and what kind of pawns you're starting with.

Chances are you're fighting 'fair' instead of with an advantage. You don't want your pawns fighting 1v1 until you get melee super soldiers with shield belts. You also need to micromanage most fighting interactions in the game. You can't just let the game do it's simulation thing.

1 or 2 wood/steel traps in a corridor leading into your base with an open door, or bait enemies with your pawns or something else. you really don't need to do a lot of building to achieve this.

concentrated fire from ranged shooters with one melee pawn in front

typically killing one or two enemies will get the early game raiders to flee.
