The Void caller loses one hp every time it attacks, similar to the Healer. the different kind of health bar is to indicate the similarities between powerful magic units.

The void caller is special because it can attack through walls is the best I came up with (which is very much a powerful ability).

As far as how to tell how units work, watch the animation frames. Units that "shoot out" particles from their hands in a forward motion can be blocked. Units which summon damage at the source cannot be blocked by terrain.

There's no way to tell except to experiment with them; same way how lightsource units don't have any blinking indicator on them that says "I make the game visible!!!"; you have to play them and find out. Most of the weaker units don't really have any gimmicks, so by the time you encounter your first one it feels bizarre, but there are around 10 units that all have very unique mechanics you'll never find out except by playing with them. (the void caller and Healer both count here)

That stormy anal ring of death was a bad idea from the beginning and should be optional for hardcore challenge seekers only. Finally managed to disable this bullsh1t by applying mods and the game feels fun and enjoyable (sadly offline only).

It is.
Had one map with a beach sandbar near base, and had to saw orbiters for my first upgrades.
I just sat my commander at a point and fed goo from the spawn into him.
Was completely afk.
only hit level 6 in 30 minutes, though.
Even had the saw blades taking out almost 7-14 at a time, in a solid stream.
Combine with soylent goo for MAX profit.
