For example, where is the logic behind Verso helping and befriending the Expedition and Alicia explained? If he wanted to unexist himself and Canvas, he could just aid Renoir, who also is perfectly capable of erasing him (Renoir offers that in cutscene right after Paintress).

During a camp scene, Verso mentions that he saw the real Clea in the canvas three times. The first time was while he was with Expedition Zero and was told the truth of his existence. The second time they met, Clea recruited Verso to her side and warned him that Alicia had entered the canvas. The third, and final time, Clea warned him that Alicia had been reborn in the canvas as Maelle and to keep an eye on their sister. Verso joined the Expedition to keep Alicia safe and hoped that they would help him in getting his mother (the Paintress,) out of the canvas.

Verso did not know that the real Renoir's intention was to erase the canvas. He didn't learn this until he read Alicia's letter and was told that his mother paints life and his father paints death.

I am of the opinion that Renoir could not erase Verso. Aline purposely made Verso immortal and Renoir is not skilled enough to paint over his wife's creation. Not even entering the border realm, a place he should not have been able to enter, could erase Verso. Maelle appears to use her powers to keep Verso intact. But I'm not convinced Maelle had as much of an effect as she thinks she did.

Initially, Verso did not want to destroy the canvas. As I said before, Verso wanted merely to get his mother out of the canvas. But Renoir decided not to follow through on that intention. While Verso watched his mother coughing and too weak to even stand in the real world and knowing that Maelle had lied to her father about leaving on her own, Verso decided right then and there that the only way to protect his entire family was to destroy the canvas himself. He deeply regretted this decision because it meant the destruction of Monoko, Esqueie, Sciel, and Lune. But that is the heart of Verso's character. He is willing to sacrifice everything, including himself, for his family. Just as the real Verso gave his life to save Alicia from the fire.
