Max - push-pull system
I'll describe a method for a simple system operating on a single track between two terminus stations. The principles remain the same even if your layout is more complex. For example if you added a third terminus was routed in a loop around all three, the arrangements at each terminus would still be identical; you would just have to take care of the routing using signalling etc.
So, the simple system: We'll use the train AI flags from pages 7/8 of the Track Add-ons drawer. At each terminus, end the track with two short sections, say lengths of 4 or 7. Then at the first of those, i.e. the one your train will hit first when it's arriving, place a 'Stop and wait 10 seconds' flag. Select 'Q' to open its menu. Set its 'Source track' to the section you've placed it at - you may have to tab through a few track sections before it gets to the one you want. Set its direction option to 'Fixed' and make sure the arrow is pointing in the arrival direction. Set the 'Wait' option to as many seconds as you want. Close the menu.
From the drawer select the 'Reverse' flag and place it next to the final track section. Set its Source to the final section of track and its Directions options the same as for the 'Stop and wait' flag. That's it! Now when a train under AI control arrives at the station it will stop in the penultimate track section and wait for however long you told it to. It will then move forward and when it gets to the final track section it will stop and immediately reverse. When you've set up the second terminus the same as the first, the train will travel backwards and forwards between the two stations forever.
I've assumed you have some familiarity with the AI system, but if you're unsure, read Gauge's 'Official AI Guide' where all is explained.
A final point - you may not like the train moving forward before it reverses. It does so because it has to reach the 'Reverse' flag's Source track before it receives the instruction to reverse. The solution is to play around with the track length of the penultimate section and the speed of the train on arrival, so that it stops just short of the final track section. The forward movement will then be minimal.
Hope this helps!
