Based on how the previous games changed, I'm thinking they don't count deaths/respawns anymore, and they're trying to weed out possible ways to get yourself truly stuck, so the gameplay is already as optimal with autosaves as with quicksaves, since it's not a game with any significant costs to any 'failure'.

If you go to the main menu, you can get a list of all your previous autosaves if you want to try out a different way of solving previous puzzles without a complete restart.

That said, I do prefer emulators and games with quicksaves in general, since they let you do crazy stuff, but it's not a flaw in the design for this game.

That is historically indeed not correct.

But without it, the game is very, very unbalanced: is is pretty easy in the game to take prisoners (as it should be, there were more than 200.000 Union soldiers and more than 400.000 confederates soldiers taken prisoner) and getting all those weapons would make the game way too easy.

This. I don't mind if the content is bland for a while even though we need more variety too. A year and a half later, the performance got worse and worse. It's getting out hand to the point that being anti-MFG/upscaling myself, I play with AFMF 2.1 now, not that my native UWQHD ultra settings framerate is that bad to begin with but the game is that unoptimized.
