For survival game's sake, not removing magazines totally but maybe need to read one book to unlock skill..1 book only..then it would be like in elder scrolls.. craft craft and learn by doing.
A T1 robotic sledge takes 10 duct tape, 10 spring, 40 refined iron, and 1 robotic part to make. You will need to make hundreds of them before you can make a T6 robotic turret.

I don't think most people understand what they're asking for when they say they want learn by doing back.

Not to be argumentative, but I played 7D2D during those years. Hundreds of hours, and yes Crafting items to gain experience to skills did require making a few extra items, but there was a curve to it. I never ever had to craft more than 4-5 Augers or a Half Dozen Robo Turrets to bump up my crafting skill in those categories to an acceptable level to get a Level 5 item, If you played during those times, you might scour your memory a little bit more; then realise that the base skill levels covered a broad range of individual actions. Craft 8-10 wrenches for example, and your base crafting skill would rise so you you didn't need to go through such volumes of items to craft more advanced things. I have seen quite a few posts of people exaggerating how many stone axes they crafted. I can't remember EVER crafting more than 25-30 stone axes, then maybe 10 - 12 Iron axes, Maybe a half dozen AK-47, maybe 5-6 pistols. That wasn't a big issue as with My group...the first AK-47 made (for example) would go to the person that crafted it. Then when I would craft another I would announce to my co-op friends that I could gift the old one. So its not like most of those...multiple crafting of items didn't get used. Surplus items crafted, (if a person was playing solo) that weren't totally common things, if they were of a more advanced type could also be sold to the Traders too.

I am not against learning by the use of books and magazines. What doesn't sit well with me is that Learning by Doing....was TOTALLY eliminated. It makes no logical sense. A hybrid system could have been implemented, one that would require some books to gain skills more related to "Hard Sciences" and Advanced Tradesman skills. Medicine such as Antibiotics, Robotics, Crafting a Gyrocopter; Even the crafting of High Explosives, such as HE Rounds or Rocket Launcher ammo. If you require books to make those leaps of knowledge, then it makes sense to "need" books. But telling me that I can't improve My ability to hammer at a zombie unless I read a book, or that I can't improve My archery skill with Practice on my aim without a book to guide me, well........it makes no sense.

A huge majority of video games do require the Players to take some leaps of faith and suspend disbelief on many levels to accommodate game mechanics. But one of the differences here is that THIS Game, did have a system in place that had elements that made sense.....but were removed rather haphazardly with little thought into making sure that the new system being added, would make sense too. But learning ONLY by reading books and magazines, doesn't accomplish that.

and I will end this now, before I start sharing my feelings on the Farming system.

Be well everyone.
