no it’s not. sonic doesn’t look right in a car; people have explained this to you already. it’s like you don’t want the series to get better.
Why would you focus so much on Sonic being in a car instead of focusing on a car itself? Does Crash Bandicoot look stupid to you after you discovered that he was racing in a kart?
And it's not like you're gonna focus your vision solely on Sonic while racing. You're supposed to watch your road while driving, blud
Sonic is not Mario or Crash.

Although Sonic has been in a car for longer than he's been on a hoverboard, the first Riders game did a great job on making a very unique style of racing game to separate it from other mascot racing games that were all using cars in some form. Instead of driving and/or drifting with a focus on weapons, Riders has more of a focus on tricks and taking advantage of the character's unique abilities to come out on top, which you would not get with a car.

The only reason many people didn't like Riders when it first came out was because it was a very different kind of racing game that barely explained any of its mechanics making it very hard to get into. That, and the Sonic hate bandwagon was at its strongest in 2006 mainly thanks to 2005's Shadow game and the next gen Sonic game on PS3/360 so it was probably also a case of coming out at the wrong time.

It certainly didn't help that the follow up games after the first game were even worse - Zero Gravity over-simplified its mechanics making it feel somewhat dull to play likely as a result of the Wii's motion controls, and Free Riders was barely functional Kinect garbage like a lot of other Kinect games were. These two games, especially Free Riders, as well as the reception Riders 1 got at launch is what probably gives Sonic Team the thought that the very idea of Sonic racing on hoverboards is the problem and not the execution of said idea.
