Why are people still playing gacha games?

Honest question, in a world with thousands, hundreds of thousand, however many games there are, why choose a gacha?

I don't understand, please enlighten me (not meant sarcastically).

Why not?
Gacha is just one game mechanic, you have management, rpg, action, shooter games, etc that use gacha/lootboxes mechanics.
Some people might genuinely want a gacha, but me and everyone I know play games because they're good. Period.
And no, there sadly aren't that many games around that have the level of quality and enjoyability lot of gacha bring. Dozens at most.
Uma Musume has fantastic characters and story, addicting gameplay, great music and chara design, and fast game sessions. It's genuinely good and destroys not only most other gacha games, but lot of other games without that mechanic. Several people in the thread mentioned having more fun on this game than any recent AAA, that's something to acknowledge.

Now for gacha in general, F2P games either use in-game payments or advertisement to get money. I'll take the first option any day. Among in game payment you have generally the following: spending money to play (energy models), to save time (building time) to get a weapon etc that is an advantage over others (P2W), to get customization/outfit, or to get specific characters (collectibles). You may or may not put RNG over it with gacha/lootboxes, but even if you don't, you'll likely far exceed the amount paid for a ''full game''. You have to, since not everyone pays.
We could discuss which is the best but it'll be a matter of preference. In the end, it's just a game mechanic. You may dislike gambling, this is what your posts seem to imply, but just to be clear, I started one of my first jobs at a F2P game company 11 years ago now, there were no gacha, no lootbox, only a premium system that helped you fast forward building construction. 95% of players were F2P, and we had people spending well over 10k in the game. It was a farming game. You owned a farm, almost no player interactions. That's all.
My point is, people spent money stupidly well before gachas, and having your efforts not rewarded is what happens in any MMORPGs raid where you fail the ROLL(sic) to get legendary weapons. You might not understand, but you don't necessarily need to. I fail to understand the point of most adult games in the platform myself so...

For the record I might mention I'm also a solo game dev. I launched a game on Steam 2,5 years ago, sales still haven't reach enough to break even and make me win even 1€, so I'm willing to let lot of things slide when it comes to game funding.
Launching games with a full front payment is very hard nowadays, esp with the ''hundred thousand games'' you mention. It's no wonder gacha and similar models are increasing, you have far less risk of going under and can keep being 'in development'.

Also, if anyone wonder about my playtime on Uma Musume, I play on mobile, played it on release on JP too, it's a very special game and Nice Nature is the best.

Wouldn't that be you? You're the one initially claiming it was only a few people complaining, while Japanese government offices received letters of complaints, historians and politicians spoke out about Lockley's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and the petition that had reached like 100k signatures to want Shadows canceled. Would we count the creation and support for Yasuke Simulator as protest from detractors too?

Also on Japan and WW2, isn't that divided? School systems don't touch on the war much but just as there's historians, politicians, etc. that want to deny the war crimes, there are historians, educators, and activists that acknowledge and campaign for full recognition.
You were the one who questioned the fact that there were only a few and not the other way around. So how do you define “few”?

I don't see how it's divided when every institution and authority, right up to the government in Japan, denies their actions.
Yeah because of explicit evidence. It was on the news, Lockley packed up his ♥♥♥♥ and left because he was getting blasted everywhere over his ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and iirc it was revealed he had never even set foot in Japan to even do proper research. People in Japan wrote in to government officials, and it was even discussed in parliament. Your posts just seem to reek of sophistry at this point.
Like I said, last I checked it was 80% advocacy for recognition and 20% denial. But hey, let's give China a pass for the purpose of their great leap forward, amirite?
