Valve Anti-Cheat: Information Thread | Valve Anti-Cheat System (VAC)
Get an AV and an Anti-Malware, there are plenty of decent ones for free like Avast, Malwarebytes, AVG.
This is the second time today I've seen a post that mentioned Windows Defender detecting a hack tool. Not accusing you at all, of course, I just found that a bit interesting. I suppose it's possible for malware of some type to tamper with certain files; for instance, a third-party application that claims to be an FPS booster may perhaps be something else instead (this is just an example). As the other users have stated, though, it's a bit unlikely.
You don't have to use cheats yourself for your account to get banned, as there are a few other things that may contribute.
I was suggesting more that it interacted with the game in a way that triggered a VAC.
But please, note, I said it was unlikely. I've never heard of a single confirmed case of someone getting VAC'd by malware.
VAC Bans are delayed. They can happen days or weeks after you were detected hacking.
Bans are also delayed so what you were doing just before the ban is irrelevant and the ban could of been for something you did months before it was applied.
I thnk that Windows defender identification as a hack tool suggests that its not just a virus, but one that is pareticularly involved with cheating (which is often colloquially referred to as hacking).
Coincidence that someone else gave the exact same description regarding their ban a short while ago...
To ensure your account does not get VAC banned, use only trusted machines to play on VAC-Secured servers. If you are not sure whether or not the machine you are using to connect to Steam may have cheats installed, do not play on VAC-Secured servers.
Use caution when installing any game modifications like scripts or custom skins, and only download custom content from trusted sources. Hackers may maliciously disguise their cheats to cause others to get banned.

(see the words "avoidvac" in the link ?)
So yes, as many forget that cheats that one downloads can often have much more than one bargains for.
This is not how VAC works. VAC does not ban instantly. Bans are delayed from days to weeks.......some have said months.
