So.. That square app icon that showed up today..
Just got an update for the new app, aside for some (possible) bug fixes it also changed the app icon from it's old round self to a square that covers the entire panel.. Is this change intended? Because if so it's ugly, real ugly.

I made the same topic hours earlier.

If you have an Android device, it might be something regarding certain devices. Developers upload a single square icon for their apps, and the launcher on your phone determines how to mask it out to fit the device's theme. In 2019 Google decided that all icons should be rounded squares, but I guess that changed at some point as on my Pixel 5a running the latest Android, they're all circles. Certainly looking at the Google Play store in a browser, the icon is simply the round Steam logo on a transparent background, though I'm not sure if that's the same icon used as the app icon.

If you have iOS, I don't know.

Valve changed it for the new app. It has nothing to do with the phones themselves.

Everywhere I'm seeing shows it as the old circle though, including on devices that wouldn't have any cached data, so I'm not entirely sure about that. What I am also seeing is sometimes on Samsung phones the launcher gets confused and occasionally incorrectly shows icons as squares instead of the default shape.

That's an Android launcher feature that lets you uniformly choose what icon shape you want to use for all apps. I don't use the new app version (I made instructions how to downgrade anyway), so I wouldn't know if their icon implemented that or not. If not, blame Valve.

Valve is supposed to upload a square icon. That's Google's guideline on the matter.

Which is why it makes me think that the launcher on some phones has done something wrong and is not applying the mask after the update.

Is this something that could be fixed on our end or is this a valve end issue?

If my guess is correct, it's something affected people have to fix on their phone as it's something controlled by the launcher on your phone. Unfortunately the only information I found on the subject during my exploring was regarding Samsumg phones. For them it was something about enabling developer mode, and then playing with the icon shapes to basically force the launcher to re-apply the masks. For other phones, or in the event that doesn't work, I don't know. Android allows different launchers to be installed, and I see Nova Launcher mentioned a lot on this subject, but that seems overkill. A simply uninstall and reinstall of the app itself might get the launcher to fix it.

So just for reference, reinstall didn't work. So.. *Shrug*
