Android Desktop mode
Hi there, do you think that steam is gonna develop some day a new mobile app that is capable of playing desktop or more likely Linux based games in the new Android Desktop Mode of Android 10 or Samsung Dex? I really would like it because smartphones nowadays are fast enough to play some games not the tripple A games but some of them and it would be much easier to go to somewhere put out your phone plug in a monitor and some peripherals and then just game on it.

Not really, no. The Link app and game streaming is where they are focusing.

:qr:
i think no dude
No not going to happen.

They will NEVER be fast enough to keep up with PCs simply because the different nature of the two different machines.

Mobiles are PORTABLE devices, so two main factors will ALWAYS be limiting - space and power.

So mobiles will never compete adequately with PCs because they would have to be as large as, and as power hungry as PCs.

So it's fruitless to create a platform that would do that because that would involve Valve having to create a whole OS ecosystem and test each and every game individually.

Go and look at MS with their Xbox ecosystem. Look at how many original Xbox games are emulated on the Xbox One and the latest system. They're a handful - so just imagine the amount of resources needed to do that. It'd be impossible to keep up.

I think it wouldnt be impossible to emulate like 15 year old x86 pc games on a modern high end ARM smart phone. From the technical side this clearly would be possible (with controller games for example). I think this is more likely not to happen because it would take a lot of money, time and effort to do this for a relatively small amount of revenue. Nobody would simply enjoy playing such old games on a smartphone.

Fair point. It is all a bit diminish returns, isn't it?

I mean the more likely the chance of getting such a thing to be possible, the less chance there's a market for it.

That is what steamlink is for. How would you expect pc desktop games to run on android?
I don’t think so.
