I think Steam Trading Cards are becoming a problem....
We enter the scene at 6:30 A.M, Eastern Time. In a long night-to-mourning run of farming resources in Warframe with clan buddies. I'm am greeted by a random person who sent me an Invite on steam. To answer all questions: I'm a friendly kind of guy; you friend me, I assume you want someone to play games with, I'll totally do so.

This was however not one such case. I'm getting really tired and trying my hardest to stay conscious for my team, when suddenly the random new friend greets me with a hello. I respond in turn, and she gets right down to business.

Steam Trading Cards.

She wants.

She ask if I collect them myself. I tell her no, because I like the games; the cards are worthless to me. =D
She asks if I'd be willing to give them away. I ask her how much is she willing to pay. She says they're worth nothing to me, so why keep them. I tell her I don't keep what's given to me automatically. If she wants them she needs to make a better wager. Here's where the story goes thus far:

  • While killing floor may be a good time-waster, it's not worth trading for by any standards. Like, at all. >.> Trade you're dead dog from kindergarten before that and we might get a deal going...
  • Half-Life 2 Deathmatch. I almost D'aww'ed at how adorable the gesture was.

I told her no, and that her offer won't make the track team this year. It baffles her beyond comprehension as to why I don't want the cards but don't give them to her for free; That I literally only play the games for the games and the cards aren't even a factor.

♥♥♥♥♥♥ to life.
I tell here that perhaps if she had something worth my while like, oh say, games, she might have a conversation going.

She doesn't back down. Her quest for the steam cards and badges yet continues:

  • any other gamer who doesn't check around as often as I do on news would've fell for that humble bundle in a minute. On a personal note, that's low two-fold.
    1. those games were bought to support charity, not your card addictions.
    2. To try and trade someone games from the humble bundle as an offer for what you clear find worth more than it looks, knowing that said games are/were being sold at a minimum of at least 20 bucks is just low.
  • Do I want the keys for a friend? lol what? hell no! I'm charitable and give my friends games all the time. Why would I trade items of someone's value to do that? Silly rabbit, Trix are for kids.
  • Two Worlds 2. I don't even wanna go there. an average passable game but certainly she can do better.

  • Coupons? what??? I will say that this is the first time in my entire life for using steam for about 2-3 years, that I have near heard of Steam Coupons. And even then they're virtually as worthless as the cards. probably more. Steam has deals like ever other evening; who in Tom Sawyer's basement would even dare bother to use them??
Plus you have other sites that sell steam games, like Greemangaimng or GOG, and they've got deals too so that's pointless all around. Seriously? Garry's Mod coupon? 50% off.
Because I always tell myself how I'm missing out on it, and that it'll never drop from steep price hell. Woe is me. At this point I'm gasping for air as the laughs keep rolling in.

  • Revenge on Titans would've actually got me a few months back when I was checking out new games. Got to play it at a friend's place, and realized my heart wasn't fully into it. It was a good game, but my fun with it died after a few hours. Tough break for her.

She is not backing down. not yet. I can feel the desperation after those last few offers. Not sure how she'll go from here.

  • Shank 2? =O Actually I game I would enjoy. now we have something to go on. Things are starting to turn in her favor. Intrusion 2 was unneeded and not worth it, but the offer was gracious enough. =)

  • before she pressed on further in her attempts, I was overwhelmed with a new-found curiosity: what makes a person go through so much as to friend someone on steam just for cards and badges? How much could all of these really be worth to her to go through all that trouble for some measly images that anyone can get if they just play the game. I honestly had to know. She shuns it off as nothing more than a collection. I find it still confusing but I don't press her on it.

  • I ask what are the cards she wants for her offer of shank 2. no demon's gamble behind it I assure you; just still very curious, and I'm not just gonna give her them all(I have a lot....) for just one game. especially not on that's worth on 15 bucks at full resale. She's getting belligerent. yes, only a set number of cards, are you crazy? The balls on this lady.

  • of course I have no plan of trading. I'm some random guy you found on steam and befriended for virtual trading cards! you're the worst kind of ♥♥♥♥♥ I've heard of in my life. And this is my first time hearing of you!

  • she claims that I said I'll give her them all for one game. reading through my our message, I said:

"Get games that I don't have that are worth an interest, and I'll totally I'll give you the cards. I'll give them all, hell."

    get games....
    GET GAMES.

    not game..

She rage-quits on me. Guess she couldn't Tri-Force. Its not even 30 seconds before she's back with a retort.

It goes on. Conversation Ending [i.imgur.com]

  • She tries to turn my quote against me. I tell her the proof is in the pudding. she even states the line I stated above! I tell her she's getting cheeky. All that dong will start to slow her down on her midday commutes eventually.

She has the sheer balls to claim that I've got something to learn. Meanwhile on earth...

She's here, in my friend's list, at 6:30 a.m. in the mourning asking me, a totally and complete stranger (I could be some criminal sex offender who loves video games for all she knows), for virtual trading cards that have as about much value as a bag of off brand chips in the presidential suite of a London Condo, is amazed that I wont give them away, is not willing enough to go all in for them, and believes I'm crazy to think that if she wants them then she needs to up her offer?

BEST.
MOURNING.
EVER.
IN THE HISTORY OF TIME AND SPACE!

couldn't even sleep afterwards so I posted it here.
I'll cherish it always.

But seriously, these steam cards are a becoming a problem. I like games that's why I buy & support them; but not for cards and gimmicks, and I hope no one else does. though I can't make others see my view, I still consider it dumb to trade and sell cards just for badges; all of which you put more effort into than the games themselves. That's just sad. If this is creating "Steam Trading Card Junkies" then this is getting out of hand; more so than TF2 hats( at least no one goes so far as to friend me for that stuff l=\ ).

I really hope this isn't or won't become something frequent or common on Steam. I'd hate to have people from all over requesting to get in my friend list just so they can badger me about worthless cards. That's enough to make me lower my open friendliness of accepting friend request, because now I'm now sure if they wanna game and have fun or make unseemly deals that I'd find on Craig's list or a street corner....

Collecting trading cards may seem like a trivial and pointless pursuit to you, but there are quite a few people who gain gratification from it. If people enjoy collecting cards and/or achievements from their games, then power to them, right?

As long as you aren't swamped by friend requests from rabid trading card collectors, I fail to see why you would think that the system is a problem. It's a tad premature to conclude that the entire feature is problematic based on a single bad experience, after all.
These cards aren't worthless at all. They can net in quite a few bucks for yer gaming habit:

6 cents for the cheapest cards, almost 1 euro for the most expensive ones, and then I'm not even talking about the foil cards, which start at 30 cents and go up to 2 euro's and beyond.

If you don't want people to trouble you about it, just throw all those cards on the Steam Market the second you get them. That will remove them from your Inventory.

wow. you're trying really hard bro. next time set your inventory to private.

You obviously got intrigued by the fact that she is a girl. Let me tell you, only a fraction of these traders/beggars are girls, they pretend to be girls because some prepubescent guys get all excited when being chatted by the girl. The end game here is to get cards for free(or trade for keys from 1$ bundles or games that were very cheap on a sale) and sell them on Community Market for profit.

Report that person for begging.

Yup, used to get all kinds of friend invites when I had all my TF2 pre-order promo items. Setting your inventory to private is the best thing you can do.
