Unsure about Perfect Dark but I'm guessing it's linear as well. Super mario bros is also linear.
I had one quest where after I got the 3 things I was looking for I was supposed to head back to another cave. Granted I had explored a huge part of the world and discovered tons of caves. But the quest never told me to go back to a cave. It only assumed I knew about it.
Quest wasn't main story so I could ignore it but there it this where the game might sometimes not tell you what to do. Then it could get very hard to figure out what to do. With such a huge world.
What did change is the innovation, or the lack of it, but it is far easier to come up with something fresh and never-seen-before if a medium is young and fresh. Music, literature, etc. were all more innovative in the past than now, too. Plus, the rate at which people consume games today (music and books too, actually) is much higher than a couple decades ago. As a kid and teen, I would get new games every once in a while, and then stick with a handful for literally months. These days, I buy games far, far faster than I can actually play them. Saturation is definitely an issue, and a result of it is that people become more jaded.
About society changing: It's normal to feel that "back then" everything was better. Sometimes it was, usually it wasn't and it's just skewed perception. I say the same stuff now that I heard my mother say when I was a teen, and in another two decades I'll no doubt sound like my grandparents did. It's pretty normal. Getting worked up over how everything went down the youtube is useful in distracting oneself from all the regrets. :)
Yes, yes they do. Now please have them read this so they can slap you again. It is to laugh.
only a few of us old dudes might get that joke, lol
So punny!
No flaming over consoles plz!!!
Already been made - James Pond 1 or 2 I think. I've been gaming for over 25 years and I see games today are the things we used to dream of playing "back in the day" (I hate myself for saying it). Sonic - 1st game took six months to complete with no saves. It's true, as technology has improved, so has the gaming industry. The thing is, the games now are like the movies of the 1980's. There are lots of new tricks and things and yes, some of the games now are better but it's far easier to get the help to get you past a level/boss/puzzle. When I was playing Zelda on the SNES, if we got stuck it meant phoning an 0898 number to get the hints line (which if you dialled incorrectly could easily lead to a porn line - which happened to me once). I think that the gaming industry itself is that 18 or 19 year old who's full of confidence and "potential". It's been fantastic to see where we are and where we come from. And if this is where gaming is going I can't wait. Sure, there's plenty of your "Die Hard" or "leathel Weapon" style games but now we have games like "Legend" or "Lady Hawke" or "Labrynth".
This is surely due to the fact, that nowadays, youth spend many more hours inside than going out into the real world and gaining real world experiences (common sense). I'm talking simple ♥♥♥♥. Common sense things. To some, growing up nowadays, the interwebs are their world...
("The suns melting me!!! Oh wait, that's just light.").
In my opinion, the mentality in question has also been bred out of games such as DOTA2 or team fortress2..for example..where the 'kids' (I'm talking 8yr olds [FACT]) are literally addicted to the games, and due to their zero capacity to buy things (because they just are too young for money) they are forced to resort to more underhanded methods
( scamming/begging) in attaining those pair of imaginary shoes for their imaginary character or that must have 'hat'..makes me sick.
There is a film which springs to mind 'Surrogate'..But I wouldn't want anyone thinking I was being paranoid, far from it, I am speaking the truth of what is happening right now, in this day and age..
I feel sorry for this generation of kids, they have been farmed by capitalism into a life of bondage. Addicted to computer games and goaded indirectly into a life of scamming, trolling, and further disrespecting society and order. There were always revolutions throughout the generations, but as you will see, nothing like this...
Computer games (and the internet) have become superb in one capacity, but a terrible (and worrying) tragedy in another.
A movie reference! Oustanding! Which "Surrogate" are you talking about? The one from 2009 (Surrogates) with Bruce Willis where people live their lives through surrogates? Or the one from 2008 (Surrogate) where people hire surrogates to act as sex therapy partners?
Ghost Recon Future Solider just kicked it up a notch. I didn't even have to MOVE to complete a portion of a map. Yes, the PC actually did my moving for me. On another section of the map, the game actually paused combat until I moved where I was told.
