the Xbox 360 controller is just the one they made it for (+ for the Steam controller that is coming)
but my bro is using a different controller that is a copy of the Xbox and it works just great
Besides, you seem to be interested in that beta thing. Since a controller is required for this, it might be yet another reason for you to get one.
Finally, since you don't got a controller yet, I assume you don't own any consoles. Sure, you might not have that many Steam games that can be played using a controller as we speak. The amount of console ports on Steam is only going to increase, so the next game you purchase might be such a game. This is an investment!
A controller doesn't cost an arm and a leg, so in light of the above — unless the thought of using a controller gives you the hibijis — I'd say: it's worth your money!
Sorry I forgot to mention that I have a PS3 and a Wii. But yeah thanks that does make the controller idea sound more interesting. One other question though: I had a look at the controller layout for Skullgirls with a normal controller and with one of those "fighting stick" (I think it's called that it basically looks like an arcade machine controls) and seeing as the button layout for the fighter controller is similar to the default keyboard layout I was thinking of buying one of those too. Have you ever used one and if yes would you recommend it?
If you are really going down that road, I suggest getting the ''Hitbox'' rather than the fightstick (I don't think I'm allowed to post links, so just type ''Hit Box Arcade'' in Google to find out more!)! It got the same kind of buttons as a fightstick, but its joystick is replaced with buttons as well! I have a feeling you'll like that more, especially since you are so accustomed to using the keyboard. The Hitbox is in the same price range as an expensive arcade stick (did you have an expensive one in mind? $100+)
I had no idea you were such a big fan of fighting games!
Thanks I'll try looking for the "Hitbox" instead. And actually I've only just recently started fighting games but right now I'm madly in love with [i}Skullgirls[/i].
