Should I get an Xbox controller?
One of the achievements to be elegible for steam console beta testing is use big screen with a controller. After some research I discovered that Steam only supports Xbox, fighting game and multi-console controllers, none of which I have.

While there are a few games that could be fun with a controller (like Runner 2) the games that I play the most I have adapted to using a keyboard (like Team Fortress 2). So my question is: Would buying a Xbox or even a multi-console controller be worth the money?

well you may find it as fun after some time (i did) and you can buy pretty much any controller that works on pc and it needs to work
the Xbox 360 controller is just the one they made it for (+ for the Steam controller that is coming)
but my bro is using a different controller that is a copy of the Xbox and it works just great

Personally I just went with an Xbox controller just to avoid hassles with x360ce and xpadder and everyone's favorite malware MotionInJoy
First of all, two of your favorite games got full controller support. You might find both Skullgirls and Portal 2 more enjoyable (and easier!) with a controller. What do you think about revisiting the aforementioned games using a controller this time around? It might be a blast! And Runner 2 could indeed be more fun with a controller as you pointed out.

Besides, you seem to be interested in that beta thing. Since a controller is required for this, it might be yet another reason for you to get one.

Finally, since you don't got a controller yet, I assume you don't own any consoles. Sure, you might not have that many Steam games that can be played using a controller as we speak. The amount of console ports on Steam is only going to increase, so the next game you purchase might be such a game. This is an investment!

A controller doesn't cost an arm and a leg, so in light of the above — unless the thought of using a controller gives you the hibijis — I'd say: it's worth your money!

Sorry I forgot to mention that I have a PS3 and a Wii. But yeah thanks that does make the controller idea sound more interesting. One other question though: I had a look at the controller layout for Skullgirls with a normal controller and with one of those "fighting stick" (I think it's called that it basically looks like an arcade machine controls) and seeing as the button layout for the fighter controller is similar to the default keyboard layout I was thinking of buying one of those too. Have you ever used one and if yes would you recommend it?
Wow, an arcade stick! A decent one is rather expensive though. That's one hell of an expensive controller, but definitely worth it. Especially if you are so into fighting games in general, and Skullgirls in particular. It's considered by many the best controller for fighting games.

If you are really going down that road, I suggest getting the ''Hitbox'' rather than the fightstick (I don't think I'm allowed to post links, so just type ''Hit Box Arcade'' in Google to find out more!)! It got the same kind of buttons as a fightstick, but its joystick is replaced with buttons as well! I have a feeling you'll like that more, especially since you are so accustomed to using the keyboard. The Hitbox is in the same price range as an expensive arcade stick (did you have an expensive one in mind? $100+)

I had no idea you were such a big fan of fighting games!

Thanks I'll try looking for the "Hitbox" instead. And actually I've only just recently started fighting games but right now I'm madly in love with [i}Skullgirls[/i].
Omg, just after posting that I noticed Street Fighter IV Arcade Edition is on sale today! Did you see it? Maybe you're into that too. Lots of people use arcade sticks, Hitboxes or a special fighting gamepad for that game.
Do it! I did the same thing and now I'm rediscovering the joys of console gaming (without a console!) :)
Just use your ps3 controller to play a steam game to get into the beta. Thats what I did. Just do a google search for using ps3 controller with steam. You have to dl a driver or someting first and then you good.
I want to get a steam controller when they come out, any ideas on the cost in GBP?
