What happened to gaming? No game is true fun anymore..
I was scrolling through the immense list of games I managed to gathered over the years and for some reason (and I've been observing this for many years now) nothing really looks attractive and exciting anymore. Sure, there are so many "amazing" games out there, a lot of indie productions into which developers pulled their hearts and souls but somehow games don't give this "THING" that they used to. These oldies, with really bad graphics had something in them, something which makes me want to go back to them over and over (like first and second Fallout or Discworld Noir from the 90s , Fahrenheit, or first Neverwinter Nights, the list goes on). Like they lost something inherently special.Sure, there are some exquisit exceptions like Papers Please or Papetura or Mass Effect but it's a tiny percentage. The rest is just...meh...

Is it the games or is it us/me?

Finding good games is just today much harder.
What? I find good and fun games WAAAAY easier than I ever did in the 80s and 90s.

Heck, there is too many of them, whether they're older titles, current titles or yet to be released. I'll never be able to play them all before I kick the bucket. :lunar2019grinningpig:

Can you share some titles then? :)

A simple question, if you want to have AAA game today,
do you expect any established company to actually do it?

Surprisingly best games I did recently play, did come from quite small indie teams.
No, I do not only look at AAA. IN fact, a lot of awesome stuff is really small studios. Like first Fallout was, or Tim Shaffer games...His old games now get tons of remastering. These were games that left me feeling something as opposed just "meh, it was ok, but mostly it was just for killing time"...

the reason gaming isnt fun anymore is steam's fault. Steam controls the entire gaming industry with anti-competitive business practices. And if your game isn't on steam then you will never get any customers. Steam can make rules you must follow as a game developer. You can't even put a lower price on your game in a different store like GOG. If price on steam is $20 then you have to do minimum $20 on GOG as well.

If you want gaming to be fun again then steam must lose their power and stop being anti-competitive. Competetition is key to progress!
But this can happen only if WE stop buying games here. Again, convenience wins. Every time...

It's also absolutel nonsense.

If it's Steams fault then how come it's the same across ALL platforms?

I've said it many times. I've been around since the very start of gaming. I built my first computer in the 1970s, kept it and never looked back. I still use all my old computers and consoles and those old tapes and floppies still work (apart from a couple).

I've enjoyed every generation .... until this one. The last one was gettng a bit poor, but thus far, it's been dire.

I tend to buy a console when there's about 6 exclusive games I want, simply because if the console goes tits up I haven't lost anything. That's a good base.

And yet I still haven't got a PS5 or latest Xbox because they still haven't met that threshold. Triple A gaming is truly AWFUL.

That's where the problem lies. Because poorly run and managed companies are greedy, have no idea of their products or how to manage staff, and are risk averse because costs have ballooned so much.

This is well documented.

Why would I do that? I enjoy gaming.

I don't see a reason to not use a store if it has stuff I like.

When it comes to story driven games, I find it harder to get into the story and become immersed these days. I guess it comes with age? But also there is allot of uninspired writing and bad game design out there.
Oh yeah, so true. I was never really about insane graphics, I actually dont care about that. It was always about compelling stories, amazing characters and just being with these characters made you feel like a part of something unique. This is why I can still play Discworld Noir, game from 90s , even now. The story is still awesome, voices are amazing. Visual side is super outdated, but I don't mind at all..

I see three possibilities-

You're depressed. This is a sign of that.

You outgrew gaming. It sucks, but sometimes we just outgrow hobbies. Sometimes suddenly.

Too many choices cause a bit of an overload, so it's feeling like you should always be somewhere else, but you don't know where that somewhere else is.

Edit-

A fourth possibility comes to mind, which is exactly what you said. Games now just suck compared to what we used to get, so you maybe should just try some retro games or stick to the older games themselves.

I recommend games like Omori, Undertale, and Little Nightmares. The first two of these are pixel art and some drawings, while Little Nightmares is just a good game imo.
All of it is possibility. Me outgrowing games is definitely a strong one..But then again, I had nice tingling the other day, when I bought Blade Runner on GOG :) Super oldie, but feels like I actually want to play it. It's a nice change.

I will check those titles you mentioned. Thank you.

I always said for many years on here that graphics mean almost ♥♥♥♥ all.

Many times I was lambasted for it. And yet now here we are. This silly relentless pursuit of realism is gaming's biggest achilles' heel.

The triple A have no idea what the hell they're doing and all they do is continue, like Ubisoft, pushing ever onwards in tech for no good reason.

Well even if we could build a time machine, it would only alter the online store.
30% sounds a lot first, but let's put it into perspective how much it would cost to sell CDs?

Well a lot of people seem to forget that distribution of physical copies is kind of more expensive.

you have no valid reason to tell me steaming pile should take a 30% cut of all sales like they are nintenDONT.......nintendo started the 30% cut to make up for the fact NESs were costing 300 dollars to produce at release when they sold for 200 dollars......

STEAM WILL NEVER HAVE A VALID REASON OTHER THEN GREED TO TAKE 30%

To pretty much answer the question of this topic and any other topic going forward about this specifically.

"Your awake now", Casual gaming may have been fun for you, now you either play your massive backlog, or move on to something new.

Gaming companies cannot keep up with your short attention spans - even though you are their main target audience for cash flow, their just hitting blunder after blunder and your "Hype train" has slowed to a crawl.

So either settle, or find a new station with a new train heading to a new destination.
But it is not only games right? Same with movies.

Let's take for example Lord of the Rings by Peter Jackson a timeless masterpiece.
Lord of the Rings by Amazon, despite all the money, clearly the inferior franchise.

And its clear why, the first one is based on the books and has the better script,
while it had many experienced and famous actors.

We had so many games based on the Peter Jackson movies,
but not a single one for Amazons. That should tell a lot how bad it is.

Some pieces of art just can't be replicated. No matter the money.
And even if we do so, it ismost of the time overshadowed by the original.
Gamergate unleashed a world of impending apathy towards any and all game directions, gamers in general, and the decisions/thoughts gamers had towards their favorite franchises. Look at what EA has become, for example.
