Potential Scam? Please help
not sure if this fits here or in help/tips better but i'll go here for now

i just got a DM from someone on discord claiming that I recently purchased a Karambit for $900
(i don't have a job.)

they then pulled the "hi i reported you already do this pls so that steam will listen to me"
this is a scam, right? i'm not just overly paranoid? they're not making me click on any links so i'm a bit uncertain as it strays away from the typical pattern a bit

they sent me an image regarding the apparent steam support message, and i'll just paste what the "ban request" stated

"We have reviewed your ban request.

The Steam account you reported [my account link] has already been flagged by our system. As a result, the user is now blocked from receiving any messages about this illegal activity, as the account is under constant surveillance. This action is a direct violation of our Terms of Service Agreement.

Without the required appeal information, submitted to the provided email within 24 hours, we're forced to close this ticket. Consequently, both of their Steam accounts will face an irreversible ban, and their IP will be permanently blocked from Steam.

The reported account is strongly advised to submit an appeal help request to our support email appeal@steamhelpsupport.com

In addition to violating the contract, activities on the account may also violate federal and state laws. If such activities continue, Valve reserves the right to refer the matter to the authorities.

Thank you for contacting Steam Support.

Steam Support
Angela"

yeah i've seen this general pattern before, just havent seen them try this without "click this link" and i also have yet to see it with a supposed steam support message, hence why i wanted to double check

thanks anyway though
One of the oldest scams on the book.

no one from support will ever contact you outside the support ticket system. this includes steam chat or any 3rd party service like discord.

As already stated, it's a scam.

When you think about it, it's so easy to spot, why would Steam Support use Discord to contact you? That makes no sense at all and if Valve wanted to ban you, they would just do it before the ban, then explain why.

It's scare mongering tactics, try and shock you with a possible ban, but trying to gain your confidence by giving the impression that they're trying to help you avoid the ban. It's all false.
100% scam
STOP USING third party launchers like Discord. There full of scammers and can slow down your games too.

You can load games from it, and anything that can load games is a third party launcher. Google DISCORD ACTIVITIES.

Here is a link to show you that it loads games.

https://discord.com/blog/server-activities-games-voice-watch-together

Any program that loads games can be considered a third party launcher, unless they made the games themselves on their own platform. Some games companies have done this, but still are considered third party launchers, like ubisoft connect: For example, if you every used a frontloader to load games up, those are also considered third party launchers. RetroArch is considered a third party frontloader of games. It did not make the games, you just use it to load them. Technically even steam can be considered a third party launcher. So yes, discord is a third party launcher. It slows down games. The more you have on your pc, the slower your pc runs programs.
