Looking for cockpit view Space sim recommendations

I've been browsing about, looking at Evocrhon Mercenary, trying to sort out the multitudes of X games and which might be worth playing, and thought I'd ask the community for their thoughts/recommendations.

If there's one with the option of multiplayer that'd be terrific, especially if there's more of a PvE collaborative focus over PvP.

Any thoughts/tips/suggestions on the topic are appreciated.

I am certainly eyeing that one, but not sure if my system can run it. Is there something from Steam that could be a warm-up act for E.D.?

There is an old multiplayer (no single player) called Allegiance. It's faction based, so you work with your team vs another team. Haven't played for a few years, but it's a lot of fun. It's a free game now. Search for "free allegienace".

I'm not sure of your system specs, but I just bought it last week and it runs fine on my pimped out gaming laptop (780m, i7, 32gb ram) and also fine on an older desktop i use for a home theater pc (core 2 duo, ATI 5770, 4GB ram). It is really surprising, but I don't think it is a very demanding game.

A warning though: it is a "sim" in probably the truest sense; many people spend hours just learning to fly straight and dock.

For single player there is still the evergreen Freespace for around 5 bucks currently.
Multiplayer's non-plus-ultra would be EVE, though it's a subscription based MMO.

I have been looking for the exact same thing. Played allegience alot when it came out. Must be 10 years now. GREAT game. Cannot believe there isnt and updated version/ rip off out there. Eve online isnt anywhere near the same game. Allegiance is all about the piloting. Dogfighting. The 0g flight mechanics were pretty realistic.
