The auction is intended to drive a buying frenzy on the market and clear out all of the 3cent emotes and backgrounds that where just sitting around, which is exactly what it has done. Everything is moving back towards 10c as a minimum (possibly more) which means Valve gets to take a larger cut of the transaction when people sell things on the market. Ultimately it is mission accomplished.
In that case, I can forgive this "event" if and only if it doesn't become a trend.

i like it cause i got got to clear out my inventory and keep the ones i like. some people had a lot of backgrounds, emotions and cards and it was getting annoying.

I really don't care that Valve have duped some of the silly people, but they have clearly lost their archon of gaming angle.

But i suppose with the market they have now, they can experiment with these rather ostentatious events to see how far they can push the "community".

Well, if there's one thing I've gotten out of all this bitchass whining it's that I am so glad I'm not one of the whining, lazy, entitled, eternally-bottom-rung losers. Cheers crybabies, see y'all next year in your same whining threads. And yes, I do recognize some of you from last year.

Well all I can say is it was a Sale that got me onto Steam in the first place after years of fighting it and it is events like this that are making me seriously reconsider my stance against using other similar storefronts. If EA acutally manages not to pull off some act of cartoonish videogaming villainy I might actually consider doing buisness with them after about a decade of boycotting everything they touch.

I just can't stand this type of blatant manipulation. Not even sure who I'm more irritated with Valve for pulling it or the people falling for it hook line and sinker :/

Hey, even if you don't want to take part in the auction, at least craft gems and place a bid on a random game or dlc; you'll get two badges that will remind steam how wonderful their holday events are (not to mention the Steam Summer Reddit Conspiracy Sale of 2014), and 200xp is the best that most of us people that aren't card-farming team fortarded kids, counterdike shrekbeards, or BrotA jungle /v/irgins can look forward to out of this hysteria.

I get that Valve is a business and businesses want as much money as possible but holy fūcking shït.

You are literally grasping at straws to cry about now. Comparing Valve to EA who actively ♥♥♥♥♥ over PC gamers year in and year out while Valve almost by itself turned PC gaming into a renaissance, get the F out of here with this lousy comparison.

I just wish the next event won't be so revolved around the cards and stuff. Do a "win prizes by playing your games" event again.

So basically you want stuff for free, no surprise there.... your name should be Darth ElCheapo.

It does seem a bizzare choice for an event. more popular games going for 30k+ gems. even games that turn up free often are goign for 7k gems. Seeing as most cards give between 2-4 gems it's just bafferling why they would think this would work.

95% of the user base has just got to look at it and go 'meh' what's the point. I have about 50 games i could still get between 2-8 cards on. Even with as many as that there is no point.

I remember when you won free games by just playing other games and getting in game achivments. Now that was an event ;)

It doesn't bother me much, it just seems such a strange waste of time their end.

The only reason this exsists i imagine is so they can 'clean house' of cards that have now become worthless.

But it still makes little sence. Lets say you get 4 gems per card (a high estermit) and each card is/ was worth 3p (a low estimate) a 30k+ gem game is the equiverlant of £225 if you had jsut sold those cards on the market in the first place.

Madness.

Eh, the 'rich' will get most of the big games; popular titles like Dark Souls and Divinity. There's plenty of little games that don't get a lot of light that people will be keen on.

Besides, if you look at the auctions, it only shows the TOP bid. Obviously not everyone is bidding early, but if you were to attempt a 10k bid on a game where the top bid is 20k, you might find yourself within the top 10 bidders. I was surprised to see that, with 1/4 of the top bid on Dark Souls 2, I was within the top 30 bidders. Obviously there'll be new bids between then and I'll be booted off the list, but it just goes to show that the top bid isn't always what the game WILL go for.

If I had to predict? The first few games will go to the super-rich. Once they're out of the running (more or less), prices will drop by day 2. On day 3, people will scramble to buy Portal 2 Backgrounds and such so their existing gems don't "go to waste," bumping the price up again.

I already stocked on Portal 2 backgrounds, which are worth 80 gems but don't cost as much as the other backs/emotes. Splurged 12 bucks on it, so not a huge loss if my gamble doesn't pay.

Worst comes to worst, the regular sale is right after the auction ends. You'll be able to get your games then, without going through the auction.

Well I've been on Steam for 10 years now and around 600 games! Converting all my items only comes to 4k so imagine all those with less games than me?

Me too! I've been on Steam since 2003...since the time that Steam became Steam.... I have about 500 games and trading in all of my items landed me a big ol 3962 gems. I can't even get on a bidding list when I bid all of my gems. I was ranked in 82nd place on the Divinity auction for less than a day... now I'm no longer on the list.. :( Now I have sold all my emoticons and backgrounds and cards for nothing really....What the hell can I do with these gems after I fail to win anything in this auction?

SIGH, where do you think this money goes that they get from cards? Some goes to the devs and rest of it goes to Valve to help with server costs, dont be an idiot and believe that Valve gets mega rich off card sales.

Again with the entitlement, GIMME FREE GAMES VALVE OR I WILL HATE YOU AND CRY!\
Also, please do not throw out just random statistics about who likes or dislikes this event, you have no idea what percentage is taking part in this and who is not. Going by the market more than just 5 percent of steam users are participating.

Actually, yes, they're getting mega rich off of these card sales.... but its just not cards, its cards, emoticons, backgrounds, items, games, you name it. Especially for this event, this event has skyrocketted sales off the charts, you can just look up items on the marketplace and see for yourself. One of the counterstrike items I saw had 13k sold in the past 24hrs, thats 13,000 pennies, it adds up.

But hey, I'm not complaining. I'm just here to point out, that ya, they are getting mega rich off of it. And, guess what, thats part of a business people. If you're in business, thats what you're in business to do, dur.

Making millions a month..... I think they are getting rich.
