You can't sue someone for deleting their own data. There is no retention policy on 'comments'.
It's not their "own data". It's yours in their database. Don't mix things up.
And what facebook has to do with my comment? I never complained about my comments, yes hoping about just being a temporary thing. Sad? Yes. Mad? Nope.
Things that must not happen actually happened regardless how trivial it may look.
I really think this is a serious issue because comments are being deleted without any end-user intervention. Now I have a fear that it may happen again or something worse in the future; not just comments but my other contributions are also in danger (may be a bit of exaggeration but I really do feel unprotected.) I lost all my motivation to remain as active Steam community user because of this.
Some may not care about their comments being deleted. But people like myself value online and Steam life greatly and think that this is downright outrageous.
Personally I don't have any comments deleted on my profile, (actually months ago, one or two normal comments got deleted accidentally among spam comments that had phishing links. But I decided to forget about it.)
but this time most of comments I left on Steam groups and other guys' profiles are all gone; all the comments I left before 2012 Q4 are gone, except the very few old ones made in 2010.
You know what? valuable memories of old days among my friends and other gamers are all gone.
Fortunately, all my randomly deleted comments by Valve are still listed in my comment history. You know if you delete your comments by yourself or other Steam users, history also gets wiped out. So check your comment history if you still have them too. Hopefully THAT can help us recover the deleted comments, if Valve ever have intentions of correcting it.
This really needs to be fixed.
eram, it wasn't links to profiles, I linked other forum discussions. please undo the delete, or if you can't please check the links again and verify my saying.
I might have to write a letter directly to Gabe Newell. I can't help doing it.
Steam users will just move on and play games as usual but if issues like this persist, this will do no good for Steam community as a whole in the long run.
EDIT: forgive me if I am breaking rules by posting other forum discussion links. but to my knowledge it isn't against the rules. eram, I am afraid you were too quick to judge and deleted my comment without reading properly... So I will post links again, please enlighten and correct me if I did something wrong.
these guys have the same problem and created their own threads.
Obviously comments on steam is for a lot of people taken a lot less seriously. But for others it is actually taken serious. Steam should respect that fact and not just go ahead and do something.
The least they could have done was informing us of this happening and why. At least I would have respected them then... And so would the rest of the community.
My point being with the whole facebook thing... Steam shouldn't take it any less serious than that and should have informed us! There is no reason not to.
Exactly! I know Valve aims to make their own community big, wholesome and complete.
A bit childish thinking by me but,,, you know Valve has been through a lot of hassles like users boycotting paid Skyrim mods, etc.. Is really Valve retaliating their own users by not doing their best and not taking care of the basic community features? I can't help but feel very disappointed.
Steam profile is like my own website and blog now, not to mention money and time I spent to level up my Steam level. This issue must be corrected.
EDIT posts have been edited, post below removed. That's all the answers I have for you here.
