For now I think it's good that people don't have too many ways to become transparent, i.e. in the context of someone scamming another person.
(Their information would still be in the Inventory History, but regardless...)
i understand there is a certain security to be able to go back and see someone's previous names, but after a /year/ or /2 years/ one can assume any issue that old would be resolved by now.
Anyway, i want this too. When i first created my Steam account i did not understand that my "login name" and "displayed name for all to see" /could/ be different. So i entered the same name for both. Now i actually *do* have the security risk of people being able to see my "private login" name attached to my account forever. All because when i signed up for Steam it was unclear to me that i was allowed to make those two names "different".
Emphasis on the word "now". As in, you only have this problem now that you have told people this.
I thought the same.
I marginally agree with a two to three year cut off.
Uh, why should the type of game you like to play be visible to everyone? That's precisely the type of info some people like to keep to themselves, which is just fine. However, VAC bans still show up even if the Steam profile is private, so no worries there.
As far as the OP, I'm with the people who say let it drop after a couple years. I think it's good they keep the nicknames for a while, but I don't necessarily see a reason it needs to be permanent.
i agree allowing people to swap names (without recording the old name they used) every day or week.. is no good. But if you stop using a name for a year or 2.. it should drop off your list then. Any "fraud" or "scammer" issues will have been dealt with looooong before then.
Why? If i start my Steam account when i am 13 and think one name is "super cool and great" at 13... ten years later when i am 23 (and have hundreds of dollars spent on games in my account) i should be stuck with the name i gave myself at 13? That's lame. And some people are in that exact position. They've had a Steam account for ten years.
Although i'd personally like it if name changes were limited to only 1 time a month. Or 1 time every week. Or something.
