The Vanishing of Ethan Carter
What Became of Edith Finch
Firewatch

All cheapish, short games heavily story focused.

alr played both firewatch and edith finch and loved them. ill check the other game that u mentioned. thanks!
Another one I enjoyed is Who is Abby? There is a demo, although it doesn't have the visual update they've done for the main game.

Life Is Strange is also heavily story-based.

Arguably https://store.steampowered.com/app/702050/The_Song_of_Saya/ or https://store.steampowered.com/app/426690/Narcissu_10th_Anniversary_Anthology_Project/
Depending on your mood/if you are willing to give VNs a go. Narcissu 1 and 2 (free) as well as Saya are about 6h.

If gameplay is absolutely necessary, some more thinking would be necessary since most of what I play is longer than 8h. Which even that might be a bit long for 1 or 2 sessions.

Nice game. Played it and enjoyed it too. Underappreciated game.

Also you may want to check out the TALOS PRINCIPLE. Tends to go on sale alot, not 20 dollars right now though, so wait for a sale. Ive seen it even go as low as 10 dollars before.

It has a "What is the meaning of Life?" kind of philosophical story but interesting to play.

You won't find a better story honestly. There's love, hate, resentment, respect, fear, solitude. You'll make friends and then turn on each other. You'll confide in them only for them to use that against you. One moment you're on top of the world and the next, you're hitting rock bottom and it doesn't seem like there's a way back, only to claw your way out through perseverance.

You might be interested in this curator that's specialised in chill story-driven games, with a lot of obscure indie stuff
Ena's Dream BBQ is free and a pretty great storybased game.
