Video games in the last 7 years are not what we are looking for.
Red Dead Redemption 2 remains the only game in the past 7 years to crack the top 10 best-sellers list. The closest competitor to breaking into the top 50 over the last 7 years seems to be Hogwarts Legacy in 2023. So, what’s going on? Is it a lack of fresh ideas, or is it that too many studios are injecting ideology into their games that has nothing to do with the fantasy worlds they’re building? Maybe it’s the economy—are players less willing to shell out the money for games at the prices they're asking? Or are studios simply not making the types of games players actually want?

I feel like the average gamer wants something gritty, violent, with meaningful progression, and either a strong multiplayer component or a fun solo experience. Yet, Rockstar seems to be the only studio sticking to that formula in a truly well-executed way. Why aren't other developers following that blueprint with so many copy-cat studios one would think we would have more games like RDR , GTA , CyberPunk. I almost feel like where in a time period when ET released all over again the crash grabs just ruining the creativity and ability for devs and writers to create. Along with not enough department heads saying " no thats Dumb AF " scared to get called in to the HR office.

Thoughts an opinions welcome.

The problem here, is gauging the gaming industry on AAA titles, because AAA is largely overpriced and overhyped garbo.

Stop riding that hype train and grab some indie gems.

Yea, check out sea of stars, i consider it a very good indie game. I am also looking forward to a new indie game coming out soon. Of course there is no date when it comes out, but it looks very intersting to me. Just hope these new developer do not overstep their bounds.

There's no lack of fresh ideas, there's just customers wearing blinders, going for overhyped over-marketed run-off-the-mill A games.

Take off your blinders, my dude. Take a look at the wider gaming market, problem solved.

There's no "we" here. They might not be what You are looking for but myself and plenty of others are gaming and having a blast.

No idea what you're talking about with the "RDR2 is the only game to crack the best sellers list" bit (what best sellers list are you even referring to?), and no idea what you're talking about with the rest of this frankly nonsensical rant. Sounds like you just want Rockstar or some other company to pump out more Rockstar-like games & GTA clones.
Indeed it's more not what YOU looking for .... granted games are awful nowadays, but there are still games worth playing even new ones.

Baldur's Gate 3 disagrees.

Measuring the worthiness of a game against a top sellers list is a poor metric to choose.

I recently discovered Moonlighter buried in my backlog a few weeks ago. Played it like crazy to the finish and loved every minute of it. The last couple of days it's been Dead Cells and I can't get enough.

Top sellers is just a measure of how many times a game has been purchased. There's no relation to how good it is. Publishers build the hype, players chase the FOMO, Steam sells a bunch of games.

Indie games/developers are already a part of the BigTech monetization to such an extent that games can be produced in less a year, which is reflected in the quality and content. The days of the “romanticized” “indie” idea are long gone.

The "game/entertainment" market is dominated by the old companies, Microsoft Corporation, Electronic Arts, Inc. Blizzard Entertainment, Inc., Ubisoft Entertainment S.A., Epic Games, Inc., Take 2 Entertainment, Sony Corporation, Koei Tecmo Games Co. LTD, Bandai Namco Entertainment, Warner Brothers, Disney and a few others.

In some cases, companies that have been telling us for over 100 years what and how we should consume.

The companies are all resting on their laurels, releasing game content on a modular basis and have all lost their roots.

The only “development” is in the technology, otherwise we are allowed to buy the same product for decades, like Grand Theft Auto, Diablo for example and countless other products. Including imposed ethical and moral values, imposed by countries and corporations that are not even our own. Else, there is a complete lack of innovation.

There are also topics such as copyrights and the exploitation industry, DRM regulation, Branding e.g.

Not forgetting the big engine manufacturers such as Unity Technologies or Epic Games, Inc. who, like the big publishers, tell developers what they have to use. The developers then pass all the crap on to the end customers. Providers of infrastructure should not be forgotten either, such as Amazon, Google or Akamai.

Seen in this light, we are slaves, living in a artificial content bubble by BigTech. Above all because there is currently nothing that has not existed before and the market, as well as consumers are completely saturated. Well, we can extend that to other consumer goods as well. Often, the same companies are involved there too.

OP is indeed looking at the gaming world through a tiny keyhole.

I always see this comment. But alot of indie are garbage too because they just dream to do like AAA with micro transaction and TONS of dlc and alots of them dont even know how to code. They just want your money like all others.
