I use a Wacom cintiq pro with loupedeck. These do not work with Linux. At all. They don't work with Android. They don't work on iPads. They don't work on Mac (well not fully). My only option is Windows 10/11. Anyone wanting to do any kind of production absolutely requires Windows. Apple kind of ignored the creative crowd for a while and we migrated. The loupedeck doubles as my stream deck. I wish I could give up and just use Linux but it's simply not possible. Windows is so far ahead of everything else, it's hard to describe. I can't wait for my steam deck. I love steam os and Linux. I want to support this kind of development so companies can understand that choice is king.

I do a lot of video editing so no. I, however, will be switching this to my primary gaming device when it arrives. Still says shipping soon... Come on Gabe please send me mine... It can't run Windows effectively for one, which is a huge drawback for applications, and other hardware like elgato lights and sound systems and Wacom tablet integration... Linux was the wrong choice for the steam deck as a primary computing device. I'll end up using it kind of like I use my phone. My phone is a phone, my steam deck will be my gaming device, my main system will continue to edit video and my raspberry pi will still be utterly useless.

There is a way to do video edit at low rendering usage on Steam Deck, but I suggest read the manual for that.

Unless you own a potato, it does not make sense to fully swap a PC for a Steam Deck.

The advantage of the Steam Deck is portability.

The Steam Deck has a rather short battery life, and using it extensively as a PC-replacement might shorten up the battery lifespan.

I would like to add something. This tablet is probably the better one for video editing and gaming out there. Good battery life.

It's not really an option though. I love how people think video editing is easy. It's a very involved process. I mean yes you can do it on an iPad and have results good enough for TikTok, but the moment you go work for a company, things change. Even if you want a successful YouTube channel, you're still going to want a decent video editor, and a basic Wacom input tablet with at least a low end quadro GPU. It's not that expensive either. Once you graduate into using macros, you'll want a stream deck. All of these things are incompatible with Linux. Even Macs have issues with some of the newer stuff. Hassleblad cameras are notorious for being very Linux unfriendly.

The Gabe gear is really making strides for Linux, but the moment you go beyond gaming and windows XP level applications that Linux has, you'll switch over to a real PC running Windows.

The tablet I posted here is a better alternative for video editing and gaming than Steam deck. It is still expensive.

There are lower end hardware that can get the job done that make even a home setup a LOT easier. You can do what I do with a low end Wacom drawing tablet knockoff and a DSLR for right around $1200 and have a decent YouTube setup, not counting the PC. Using a mouse isn't ideal but still better than a tiny 7" display. I am aware that you can plug it into a USB dock, but you most likely have a PC already.

It seems like a fun thought experiment but the steam deck IC heats up to 91c and burns out regularly under normal circumstances. Installing an unsupported OS with drivers missing is only going to make it WAY worse. OK sure you can use heat epoxy and a small heat sink which I am going to do to make the IC cooler and protect it's longevity, but who is going to do that?

Next thought I have, is, do people use their phones for everything? I might be one of few who has a PC for PC stuff, a phone for being a phone that I sometimes watch youtube in bed on, a living room media center PC with bd drive, a smart fridge that I certainly don't install facebook and games on. Is it possible to use these things for other stuff? Yeah but why would you? I am typing this from a low end gateway laptop in my kitchen. Why does everything have to be everything? It's like people who use a jig saw for every task no matter how long it takes them despite having access to hundreds of tools...

I thought the way I spoke that it was implied that I did professional editing. But you don't need to get the most expensive stuff. You can have a prosumer setup for 1/10tg the cost and still need Windows and a proper PC to do it properly. I edit commercials for a company. At home I have some stuff that over the years I've purchased. I remember when macs were king. They fell out of favor. I really want Linux to catch up. It would be nice to have a 3rd option for people but as it stands, it's not yet there. Valve pushing steam os so hard might get developers and vendors interested as they see a spike in usage. I've used Linux, it's nowhere near ready for any kind of work and neither are Android tablets...

Unless you have a severe language barrier

Anyways sure a Steam Deck does not power through editing especially not on a professional level. But with Valves release of the Deck and the possibilities that are already discovered UNIX will get a significant boost in popularity. So don't worry Linux will catch up eventually.

So? It is $50,000 camera. Not a good way to spend it for personal use out home use when you could have just rent one or hired camera guy.

As a Steam Deck owner, they are good for only one thing. Gaming at low resolutions, period.

They are not going to handle work loads of any kind, no where near any cheap PC can do.

No where near as my current PC either, for that matter.

They are a fun novelty, to game on the go. Expecting them to do much else would be silly.
