For players who don't speak English as a native language, do you feel uncomfortable when you play a game with an English interface and subtitles?
I can speak English, I studied in a language school for five years and I kept practicing with movies, series, games, news, documentaries, news, etc. Although I don't have difficulty reading English, reading a lot in the game in English sometimes makes me feel "lazy", for example GTA V, I've played GTA V in English several times, I understood a lot without having difficulties, but nowadays I don't feel like setting the game to English anymore, since it has an interface and subtitles in Brazilian Portuguese.

What I think is maybe this discomfort will end when I go to an English-speaking country someday and spend a few years there, which is the example of exchanges to Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, because as I will see and listen to everything in English, I'll kind of be "forced" to understand everything without having the discomfort I feel here, then I'll get used to it and no longer be "lazy" to play games with the English setting.

On the contrary, I always play games with English interface and subtitles. This way, I can always learn new words and expand my vocabulary.

I don't think it's that weird to prefer a native language over a second language given the option.

I tend to play games in English rather than my native language for mostly two reasons. The first one being ♥♥♥♥♥♥ translation & synchronization as paramount in games. Rather often, those get the content of the story across but lose a heap of flavor in the process. And in other cases, those are plain & ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ horrible. If I just wanted to know about the game's plot, I would read up the synopsis online. When playing the game, I want flair, I want flavor, I want all the nice stuff!

Another reason is mental exercise . English is the lingua franca. Try to look up any scientific paper. Chances are, it's in English. Makes sense, employing an army of translators isn't practical and theres the danger of missing tiny details (that are often important),cooperarikg in one language makes sense from a practical standpoint. Same goes for technical documentation.

Its not only games, technical documentation is easier to read in English than in German (my daily language) as it gets written in English anyway and gets (badly) translated later. Unless it's from China, this stuff tends to be horrible to read either way.

No, I prefer playing in English. Translations, as ReBoot mentions, often lose essence. Plus it's just weird, it doesn't feel "right". But that's perhaps because I'm used to games being in English as there were no Dutch translations for them when growing up.

When software is in Dutch, I actually have to think about the translation for things (like certain settings) as I'm used to them in English. So yeah, English feels more natural to me for software (and thusly games).

The only thing I really have difficulties with is using my native subtitles and hearing the English language at the same time.

The "translations" are sometimes very basic and bad. I have to deactivate them after a while, or switch to the English subs. I can speak English as fluid as my own language. Gaming did that to me other the time.

I am for a long time at the point, that I even think in English, no longer having the need to translate everything back in my mind. On the flip side I found out, that is is rather difficult for me to translate something back into my language. For that I have to concentrate more. Maybe that is also the reason I prefer not to use my native subs.

Some games, especially indie games tend to use automated translation like Google Translator or similar tools, which results in low quality or even comical translations.

I dated a girl that learned English from TV. She spoke good English but she talked like a character from TV.

No. Good opportunity to learn the language. And few games have translations to other languages anyway.

If you can understand the medium's original language, it is always preferrable to enjoy it on its native language.

This applies to any language, not just English-native games and other media.

No. Because it's 2022 and basic knowledge of one of the most important languages in the gaming industry is somewhat to be expected.

Actually pretty much every game has a setting to change the language because its not expected. It would be a silly world if someone had to take years of language courses to play a video game.
If that was the case you would have to learn French to play Ubisoft games and so on.
Trust me, they are not putting your games in English because they think you are better than them. They put it in English so you will buy it because you know you are not about to learn another language to play a game.
How arrogant can you get? Do you go to other countries and demand they speak English and wear American clothing?

Not to mention that some people may know English but prefer to play in their native language...
