For players who don't speak English as a native language, do you feel uncomfortable when you play a game with an English interface and subtitles?
I can speak English, I studied in a language school for five years and I kept practicing with movies, series, games, news, documentaries, news, etc. Although I don't have difficulty reading English, reading a lot in the game in English sometimes makes me feel "lazy", for example GTA V, I've played GTA V in English several times, I understood a lot without having difficulties, but nowadays I don't feel like setting the game to English anymore, since it has an interface and subtitles in Brazilian Portuguese.

What I think is maybe this discomfort will end when I go to an English-speaking country someday and spend a few years there, which is the example of exchanges to Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, because as I will see and listen to everything in English, I'll kind of be "forced" to understand everything without having the discomfort I feel here, then I'll get used to it and no longer be "lazy" to play games with the English setting.

I tend to play games in English rather than my native language for mostly two reasons. The first one being ♥♥♥♥♥♥ translation & synchronization as paramount in games. Rather often, those get the content of the story across but lose a heap of flavor in the process. And in other cases, those are plain & ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ horrible. If I just wanted to know about the game's plot, I would read up the synopsis online. When playing the game, I want flair, I want flavor, I want all the nice stuff!

Another reason is mental exercise . English is the lingua franca. Try to look up any scientific paper. Chances are, it's in English. Makes sense, employing an army of translators isn't practical and theres the danger of missing tiny details (that are often important),cooperarikg in one language makes sense from a practical standpoint. Same goes for technical documentation.

Its not only games, technical documentation is easier to read in English than in German (my daily language) as it gets written in English anyway and gets (badly) translated later. Unless it's from China, this stuff tends to be horrible to read either way.
I know, it's mental exercise, now you get what I meant when I talked about to feel "lazy" to play a game in English.

Who said English is my mother tounge? That's Arabic and Russian. Besides: I answered a question which asked about my oppinion about a certain topic. I dont need to justify my personal oppinion just somebody doesn' like it.
How many times must I correct your spelling? It's one "p" in opinion.

I suggest you stick to any of the many other languages you speak because your continued butchering of mine make me weep.

Have you ever heard about typos?
No, that's okay. I just don't know how to write it. He's excused.

I think everyone should play in whichever language they feel the most comfortable with. It's gaming, it's not worth two milliseconds of decreased enjoyment just to play something in English.

Saying that though, I don't play games in my native tongue mainly because games rarely get translated into it, and when they are, I literally struggle to play most of them. Languages with comparatively small colloquial vocabularies, and which have large regional accent variances, don't always work well in certain forms of entertainment. Even the local English voice acting is seriously hit or miss.

Also, there's a whole conversation about localisation, which is usually far more important and complicated than just the base translation.

Aside from all that, it might be better for children, depending on their career paths to play in English; I learned bucket loads by playing Sierra adventure games and reading through pages of walkthroughs.

Not exactly umcofortable at all times, but sometimes its annoying to lose part of the dialogue because not knowing certain words. But its better than bad localization. I mean, GTA, the series in general, is known for having awful translation. Every damn game. It's so bad I did my own localization files of the 3D era games.

You got what I meant, there are certain words I still don't know the meaning.

Definitely English before my own language if I doubt I can understand the original enough to play it. Which is almost always x)
Also helps quite a lot when you are stuck and don't have to translate your problem back and forth. Like getting stuck on the quest for the huntsman that's actually called a ranger and you don't have to kill 15 deer but stags ... or trying to get the Legendary Doodad of Something or Another.

But I am scared enough from playing Oblivion in German. I still run into fireballs to get healing when I am short of "Schw. Tr. d. Le.en.-W"s.

As general, always be yourself. You shouldn't be forced to speaking English only. There is no reason for someone tell you what to do with language.

Off topic. Sometime I had to stop the Facebook group admin from being racist due to being biggest supporter of the ASL and against another different kind of sign languages.

I play games in English by default, even if a German version is available. Translation and/or VA quality has just been horrible back in the old days; this might have improved, but...

There are exceptions to this, of course:
  • if there is no English, I go with whatever is there (Japanese, usually). I will definitely need the subs for that, though. Can be annoying at times, like when characters talk with the end boss during the fight, but the game classified this as "taunts" which didn't get subbed...
  • if I know that the game is from a small German developer, I tend to use the German version, as a presumed "main language for the game". Contrary to something like Japanese, I can actually understand German :-)
