Anyone else getting tired of 2D indie games?
To me the vast majority of indie games are bad games, mainly because despite the developers' status as independant most of the games are unoriginal gimmicky cash grabs if not blatant knock offs. Just think back to when Minecraft skyrocketed to the huge success it has now. Now think of all the countless garbage Minecraft knock offs you have seen over the last few years, on multiple platforms. Go ahead and try and count them because I sure can't. Whether you enjoy Minecraft or not it is good game, and it has everything you could hope for from an indie game, orginality and most of all ambition.

Now back to the topic at hand 2D retro indie games. Ever since the popularity and success of games like braid and limbo (both critically and monetarily) there have been wave after wave of 2D indie games. Some are genuinely good, but most seem to me to be shameless cash grabs trying to get a piece of the action that actual groundbreaking (or at least eye catching) 2D games already got. Essentially the recent slew of 2D retro indie games are to successes like braid and limbo, what the minecraft knock offs are to Minecraft.

If you followed E3 than you must have saw the many 2D indie games that will be coming out soon shamelessly be begging for your money. Sure some of them might be masterpieces, better than anything that ever came before. I for one don't care and am frankly disappointed that so many of these games are coming out. It is not because I dislike the genre either (which I do not dislike) it is because of the over saturation of the genre. I for one would much rather go play something more ambitious or entertaining, and will probably shy away from most upcoming indie games.

Some of you may respond with common quips like "If you don't like it don't play it!" or "Just don't buy it then!" and your absolutely right that is exaclty what I am going to do. But, if you do respond like that I think you missed the point of this long post. I like to play a wide variety of games, singleplayer, multiplayer, shooter, rpg, simulation, strategy, racing, fighting, etc. I like games with great and engrossing stories and I also like mindless action fests. But at the end of the day though I am disapointed by the slew of new and upcoming 2D games (hell I won't even limit it to indies).

I currently am much more excited for games like No Man's Sky and Kingdom Come: Deliverance due to their originality and ambition something many of these ohter indie devs making 2D games should take note of. I don't hate 2D games, in fact I have enjoyed plenty over the long years they have been around, however I firmly believe the genre is over done and should be shelved for a while.

Share your thoughts, are retro 2D games starting to tire you out too?

I don't buy those. Not intentionally, anyway (they might hitch a ride on a bundle that I'm getting, and I'm considerably less picky when it comes to distributing points on steamgifts as well).

I don't care whether it's 2D, 2.5D or 3D -- if it's a good game, why would that be an issue?

Also, making a 3D game does NOT guarantee that it's a good game. You aren't seriously claiming that there are no bad 3D games, are you?

Was never into them in the first place. Been gaming for almost 30 years, I have no desire to go back and play coleco or nes quality of graphics. Some people don't mind playing games that look like ass though.... *shrug* For me though they can stay in the 80's.
Loves me some 2D Indie games. :mitra::spikehair::ftlhuman::RogueIncoming::neildeal:
i havent been into 2D indie games, and probably never will

At that part of my post iclearly wasn't talknig about any genre of games specifically just that most indie games are terrible
90% of everything is terrible - Sturgeon's Law. The majority of AAA games are also cash grabs or knock-offs of earlier successful titles - look at the Sims and its myriad expansion packs, or the annual releases of sports franchises and shooter sequels with minimal changes. Personally I'm more tired of that old churn, but I know some people will play those games almost exclusively. Basically, different people like different things and that's OK.

Anyone else tired of threads created by people who had no intention of buying a certain type of game, but felt compelled to complain about them anyway?

Telling you "You don't have to buy them, ignore them and move on" is, by no means, missing the point. Your entire OP is summed up as "I have no intention of buying these games but I'm tired of seeing them and must tell the world I'm tired of them!"
not tired of them at all, I love old school games and I love the fact that 2d games are still alive and well on steam. The simple fact is there will always be a market for people like me who like old school games so developers will continue to publish them to meet those demands.

Are there some terrible games out there? Of course,, but the same can be said for any genre at any time in gaming history. But there are also a ton of awesome 2d games which would not have been made if not for services like steam and XBLA, which really would have been a shame
I agree with Sentar and even closer to Xenite. I have also played videogames for nearly 30 years. While I loved Nintendo and Sega I was always craving the next great gaming experience. 2D games are nice and there are some good ones available today but 2D gaming will not help us take the steps forward to the "Holodeck" experience. I am not saying all 3D games are perfect but 3D and virtual reality games are the steps in the next evolutionary direction.

The problem I have is with the Indie community pumping out so much 2D junk it is sickening. I find myself clicking "not interested" in my Que so often I do it almost by instinct. After building a killer PC and even before that I do not have a desire to play nostalgic 2D games after all the money I paid. That boat has sailed. Its almost as if Indie developers believe the problem with "Big" game companies is lack of creativity. Yes, part of that is true but in my opinion if you going to create a game to be published for money, go beyond your competitors or don't go at all.

It seems like a lot of the millennials are fascinated with these 2D games (and Xbox One) in general and I do not understand why. I am a collector and I have well over 700 games from Dreamcast to every current gen console as well as PC. I do not return them for the chump change Gamestop gives.I love good games and try my best to stay away from the Turds as review by professional critics. So for me with the execption of the really special ones, 2D games are a step backwards that Indie devolpers love to hang out in.

One more point, I am also a Systems/Software Engineer and well versed in C++, 8086 Assembler, Python, Java, Dark Basic Pro, and Matlab as well as several propriety High level languages. I know coding in 3D can be difficult and it is human nature to gravitate to what is easy. Doing what others can't expands the limits of what we can do as humans and I hope that gaming will continue the push for the stars and not hang out at ground level.
In the past 12 months, too much rubbish has appeared on the steam store reguarding indy games, but someones rubbish is another persons treasure. They are too many 8-bit 2D platform games and minecraft clones now and I don't even look at them anymore. They are some real gems in there but I guess most are overlooked due to the shear amount of rubbish.

2D is not a genre.

Also, the notion that "most indie" games are terrible is nothing but an opinion, and an unfairly biased one at that. There are plenty of fully-3D, AAA games that aren't worth the hard drive space they're installed on. Some examples: The recent Assassin's Creed game from Ubisoft; Battlefiled 4; the frightful mess that is Raven's Cry; etc.
Well, you act as if they haven't been around forever. 2D indie games, or just indie games in general, have been around pretty much ever since people started putting games on the internet. Think back to your days in elementary and middleschool, where everyone was getting on flash game websites and playing those games. Newgrounds has a slew of indie games posted on its site, and it's been around longer than Minecraft.

So indie games have always been around in mass, they are just starting to get taken a bit more seriously now ever since the success of a few other indie games, namely Minecraft. So let's think about it in this perspective: someone elses being successful in something often causes inspiration for others to try and succeed in the same way. So when people realize that gamers are more than willing to invest in non-AAA video games, naturally they will try to get into the scene. But what you're seeing isn't an issue isolated to just the indie genre, it's basically the same problem every successful game with some originality has to deal with: people who want to cash in on their new ideas. Hell, this is the same issue ANYTHING that makes money and is original will inevitably face.

Rest assured, however; most people are aware of this. It isn't some hidden social phenomena. People know what's popular, and people tend to notice when something copies or inspires itself from that source. Trust me, tons have called out the Minecraft clones on their... cloning. Tons have done reviews and made their claims about why this and that game is a ♥♥♥♥♥ for doing what it did. So the best thing you can do is to not invest in the games that are blatant and unforgivable rip-offs.

Not sure if you're talking about 2D or AAA...(sigh)

Strange that games like Hotline Miami, Gemini Rue, Broforce Mark of the Ninja, and FTL are some of the most highly rated games on Steam who have outsold many AAA titles and outscored them too.

Just because you don't like them doesn't mean they don't have a massive market and place on Steam.

Long may the 2D indie 'genre' thrive and continue to upstage games that cost to the tune of $100,000,000 with teams 100x larger.
