Final Fantasy order?

I've got final fantasy VII and VIII and i plan on getting the others on steam but i have yet to play any of them yet. so i was wondering what order should i play them in or even does it matter, if not i would quite like a quick nudge at what order to play them in.

Most Final Fantasy games are unrelated so it's safe to play them out of order. So the VII characters aren't in VIII. Related games are fairly obvious like X and X-2, though. I started with X myself back on the PS2, eventually got X-2, then bought other FF games on the GBA and DS. The only thing the games really share in common is that each one (or most) seems to have a Cid and the chocobo. Beyond that, worlds, characters, and stories aren't shared.

Play them however you like. The order doesn't matter ultimately. If you get into X and X-2, I'd suggest to start with X, though. Believe XIII also had a XIII-2 as well as a DS game, but I haven't played the series in years (not since the original XIII came out) so don't recall offhand.

Asking which game to start with will just result in people bashing each other on being VII fans or not (never played the game myself). Perhaps put numbers in a hat and draw one out? Best way to get an unbiased start. Or flip a coin the number of FF games you have and count the number of heads, then play that game. I.E. you own 5 FF games so flip the coin 5 times. You get 3 heads, so you start with III. Otherwise, most people will just tell you to start with VII.

ff6 then ff7 because they are the best made then it does not matter.

Just don't play 8 first in my opinion, it is not too bad but the extremely flawed mechanics may put you off the rest of the games if it is your first.

IV also has a sequel. It was called "Final Fantasy IV: The After Years". It's only been released on the Wii Shop Channel and PSP though.

All other things being equal, how about chronological if only for the graphics jump if nothing else. I loved FFVII but those character model are hilarious.

VII's graphics have aged the worst. It was made when 3D graphics were a new thing.

Any order. Like others have said, they are mostly all independent with little to no overlap.
