Pro Controller no longer working for manually added Non-Steam Games
Pro Controller no longer working on Steam for manually added Non-Steam games

Hey everyone!

I just wanna say in advance that I’m a console peasant low key playing on a gaming laptop I got from a friend (asus n550jk).

So I’ve been using my Pro Controller to play pc games by launching them on Steam. It worked fantastically. I was playing FFXIII bought from Steam, as well Non-Steam Games from Epic (Alien Isolation) and GoG (Trails in the Sky). Heck, I even had Citra added to my Steam Library and the Pro Controller worked magically for whatever game I opened up on it, as long as I launched it through Steam.

And then, one day out of no where, the Pro Controller stopped functioning properly when I launched a Non-Steam Game through Steam.

The A button on the Pro Controller acts like I’m pressing A+B simultaneously, and B also acts like I’m pressing A+B simultaneously. Nothing else registers, and the A or B button only register if I actually press them.

I’ve used the Pro Controller for Steam games after it stopped working on Non-Steam Games and it works automatically like it’s supposed to. I’ve also reconnected it to the Switch and it works flawlessly too, so it’s not a hardware issue with the controller.

I’ve gone to settings on steam to ensure that the pro controller box is ticked, but it doesn’t change anything. I honestly don’t know what to do.

My PC gamer friends are telling me to download BetterJoy or DS5Windows and to hook up my Pro Controller as an Xbox Controller, but that doesn’t really solve the issue.

If anyone knows what the issue could be, plz let me know 🙏 thank y’all in advance

So, I have good news and bad news. The good news is that there is a fix, the bad is that I don’t remember it.
I had the same issue and posted it on discord somewhere under someone else’s post. A person there answered and gave us all a script-type code (I have no clue what I’m saying) in to a box somewhere under a Steam menu and IT WORKED! All my games ran fine and life was good. (This was about a year ago). Then one day, like you, it stopped working again and for the life of me I can’t find the post or any info on how to get my controller back to normal. It only connects via a cord now and the buttons are all screwed up!
So if you understood anything I said you can google search for more info, I’m sorry I can’t help any more than that, I’m a newbie myself as well! Good luck, and let me know if you find a solution!

What is a "Pro Controller?" Very generic name.

Yea yea yea, I have no clue what I'm saying but I do know there is a fix. I'm not a gamer or computer tech at all, I own a parrot sanctuary on a mountain

IIRC, it uses the directinput standard, which Microsoft has been trying to abolish and replace with their much more limited xinput.

My go-to tool for controller configuration is the open source AntiMicro, however, the newest version is still linux-only. But the last release should recognize a Switch controller.

Or you can dump the console controller and get a proper PC Gamer's controller like the 8bitdo Pro 2 or Logitech F310, which are universally compatible, with a little tweaking.

Which PC controller do you prefer? I need one!

You both confuse and fascinate me...

Moving on.

I have an 8bitdo SN30 Pro in Famicom colors for travelling and with the Raspbarry Pi. An 8bitdo Pro 2, an old Logitech F710 which has had driver problems with Windows 10 that Logitech never fully fixed, and a Steelseries Stratus Duo, which is as solid as a rock, but only uses the newfangled xinput standard and doesn't have any configuration options.
