Casual gamer, seeking strategy game similar to Boom Beach on PC with more depth
Randomly installed Boom Beach on my smartphone and finding I enjoy the strategy aspect but not a fan of the small screen and game's simplicity. Would like to try something on Steam/PC that is similar in game mechanics but has more depth to it. I have no experience with strategy genre and am wondering which games might be good to start with. I've taken a look myself but am overwhelmed by the options. Prefer to avoid F2P.

Thank you in advance for any suggestions.

warhammer, age of empires, age of mythology, company of heroes and and and and and xcom.
Have you looked at "Civilization" or the "command and Conquer" series? The first is turn based strategy, while the second is real time strategy. FYI they are both older games, Civilizations came out in 91' and C&C came out in 95' (although the latest iteration came out in 2012)

Both good games.

So far just based on what I found Civilization is probably one of my top picks. Will take a look at Command and Conquer. Thanks!
NP, I've not played them, but I've heard good things about them. I'm more partial to tactical shooters such as rainbow six (Vegas & older), and Ghost Recon (graw 2 and older)

Try Tropic Storm on facebook&gameroom. It's much like Boom Beach and it's easy at the beginning and becomes harder then.
I guess if you want a LOT of depth while still having the real time combat, you could go as far as 4X RTS games like AI War and Sins of a Solar Empire, but the depth means they are less easy to just pick up and play than more regular RTS games tend to be.

If you aren't so bothered with combat being less of the focus of the game, Factorio is really nice in how you build up your base/industrial capacity in more detail rather than just harvesting abstract money like resources to buy anything you want at the time.
