One of my video game favs when I was a kid, the NFS Most Wanted the original 2005 released version. For me, the Xbox 360 release is the best release as I'm a Xbox playa 4 Lyfe!
However, I do like Need for Speed, Payback & Rivals as I can play as a "racer" or as a Cop!
I like playing as a piglet, although collateral damage is sometimes unavoidable :D
I think *most* of the Need for Speed titles on Steam are fine for purchase.
The ones I would recommend the least are
- - Need for Speed Undercover
- Need for Speed Rivals
- "Need for Speed"
The first one (Undercover) because it was very evidently released in a rushed state since EA at the time was also juggling with ProStreet I believe, which is another NFS game not on Steam that isn't that bad but probably didn't benefit from Undercover also coming around. EA should have focused on one or the other at the time for the greater benefit of both.
I can't say much about the other two since I haven't played them much but I'd say from the reviews and lack of mention from fellow NFS players that I watched that they are less optimal purchases.
The ones I would recommend the most are
+ + Need for Speed Hot Pursuit
(Having a remaster coming soon at this time)
(which is also not purchasable right now?)
+ Need for Speed Shift
+ Need for Speed Most Wanted
+ Need for Speed Payback
+ Need for Speed Heat
Hot Pursuit is a solid game. I have played it on my PS3 and I have played it on PC. It offers a policing and a racing side one next to the other which is more in line with older NFS games like the one Quirrel mentioned above. It has some very intense events (particularly the pursuits with the various chase/anti-chase gadgets) and it just generally looks and sounds gorgeous even before they decided to remaster it; presumably for the multiplayer aspect to come back which is also a bonus.
Out of all the NFS-s I would probably say Hot Pursuit is the best one on Steam.
I think Shift is also a great candidate but you'll have to keep in mind that you are paying for a "on the enclosed racetrack" experience with simulation-like handling rather than street racing and that may have caught some people off guard. I think it has a wonderful theme that it sticks to and it caters to aggressive and formal/professional driving equally in the career.
I have not played as much of the newer Most Wanted that is on Steam but I think that it is also a fairly safe purchase too. From what I have seen it doesn't take itself too seriously at least and lets you free-roam as you want.
A bit like Burnout Paradise which is another solid game out there that you can look at. Just be mindful that it also has a remaster, which has been known to cause problems with some people; so make sure you skim the reviews of any potential problems before you buy that.

I'll never forget the good old Need for Speed games (Most Wanted (2005), Carbon, Underground (I & II), ProStreet, etc.), but with the way Payback and Heat have been going recently I wouldn't necessarily say that the newer NFS-s are that bad for the youngsters out there now. I'm really only worried about bad practices and micro-transactions getting too much thought put into them which isn't an NFS-exclusive problem. If EA would just slow down as a company and plan their stay on a new NFS for a longer while then that would be fantastic.
I have Hot Pursuit on Steam and my 360, I'll give it a go soon
Thanks Mailer :-)
Oh. I Googled and forgot to add:
"Is it Jesus's hotrod or Jesus' hotrod?
Both ways are correct. You can add a suffix apostrophe ' or an apostrophe with a 's."
So, NFS-s would be either NFS' or NFS's
:D
The keyword being "subscription."
