Has anyone thought of using Linux I'm done with Microsoft.
I was ranting about Windows in my one thread posts about boycotting Steam and made a heavy decision and a lot of people were ranting on me. I decided to dig some research what I can do to keep using Steam so I have HoloISO installed on my computer as a dual boot. Has anyone tried this Operating System yet I can use it for a lifetime without needing another Operating System. The reason I'm keeping Windows 10 even after EoL to keep using it for MMORPGs I wish Steam adopted MMORPGs to make them playable on Linux as an option my computer has been running faster ever since I installed it. I can finally at least play some Steam games on Linux without having to ever worry about another Operating System it's actually pretty cool I even get to continue buying games from Steam.

I've been using Linux since my senior year of High School. Mostly the Debian/*buntu family.

leave pc gaming to the big boys, stick to console if your having perplexing issues over operating systems, big boy pc users don't let companies tell them what they can an can not use or expect to give money to a company to restrict what and where they can use the software they paid for.

its time to start using your pc as it was ment to be used, as a gateway to remove the media mainstreaming marketing manipulation. by having a pc that works, and falling for steams gimmicks to change your pc operating system to continue to be its customer is simply silly.

take a hard stance unlock the potential in your computer, do not allow any company, to dictate to you the price or access on the games you want to play.

So far it looks like HoloISO stands its ground and still works by far as a good SteamOS hopefully they do keep it for a lifetime as long as I can use proton experiment it SHOULD still be able to play Steam games I'm really re considering console gaming. So far no issues with HoloISO in general I will give it a few years to see how well it out performs other Linux systems still getting a kick out of it thought most games run fine on it you just can't run emulators. Some consoles I do stick with like Nintendo consoles for a reason I might just go back to being a Nintendo fan but Steam is still an incredible gaming client for sure I keep seeing older games pop up every day and hopefully other gaming companies will team up with Steam to revive older games.

I am only being cautious because the last time Valve canceled services on Windows 7 hopefully Windows 10 doesn't meet the same fate. I have Linux just in case Valve were to end services on Windows 10 which is more open source and less strict policies. Just be careful about those EoL policies because Steam wasn't build to last that long unless they change their mind and say to hell with it use Steam at your own risk on any old Windows which would be nice lol. Ohhhhh in regards to MMORPGs I wish Steam would adopt World of Warcraft as I mentioned that would be really cool to see it pop up on Steam as an option lol.

It WILL happen to Windows 10 and Windows 11, ect. It is inevitable. Just because an OS doesn't have a number, doesn't mean it won't go out dated.

Ubuntu 12 can't run Steam. Linux Mint has no version number in the name, but has previous versions that can no longer run Steam. It happens with ALL Operating systems. They all have EoL to previous versions.

Changing to Linux doesn't negate that fact.

Chromium will not work on Windows 7, 8, 8.1.

Linux

To use Chrome browser on Linux, you'll need:

64-bit Ubuntu 18.04+, Debian 10+, openSUSE 15.2+, or Fedora Linux 32+
An Intel Pentium 4 processor or later that's SSE3 capable

Eventually these Linux Distros will not longer be supported either as Chromium changes, drops code and gains newer code and features that requires a higher OS version.

So even if one switches to Linux, they still hit the same wall eventually and have to upgrade. There really is no difference in that matter with Steam or any other service that runs on multiple operating systems.

Steam (Valve, as Steam is a services, not a company) doesn't adopt games. The developers choose if they wish to put the game on Steam. Proton only provides a wrapper that lets a Windows program run in Linux. If you want to see WoW running on Linux, then it would be best to contact Activisions/Blizzard as they are the only ones who can do so.

You may be able to find a tutorial on how to get it running on Linux with Wine or a similar wrapper, but that may be a very technical and complex thing to do.

Don't get me wrong. There are many good versions of Linux and it is a viable alternative to Windows, especially with the strides that Valve has made with it.

I just don't want people to think they can install a version of Linux (ie, Ubuntu 18) and never have to update anything on their system again, because it WILL eventually have to be upgraded for a future Steam Client eventually.

Still need updates and still have out-dated versions of an OS, no matter if it is Windows, Linux or Mac/AppleOS.

Sorry for spam how do I get the actual SteamOS installed on my computer is it possible I wouldn't mind staying stuck on it to keep running services with Steam. I like the whole digital games idea but these policies are my only complaint and are harsh but I am trying to cooperate as best as possible with it. Everytime I download the ISO it will never actually burn onto my flashdrive if I can use SteamOS without compromise I would be set for a lifetime on my computer.

SteamOS isn't the end all, be all for games. It is Linux based and so limited to Linux based games and Proton.

There are many tutorials on how to install it out there.

Keep in mind that a new version may be on it's way as Valve may be moving it to the same version as on the Steam Deck. That means a complete reinstall as the current SteamOS is based on Debian and the Steam Deck version is ArchLinux.

Bruh I don't blame you for liking Windows 7 and skipping out on Windows 10 and all the other stupid so called modern Windows. I bought a used emachine for nostalgia that has Windows 7 on it maybe I will downgrade it to Windows Vista or Windows XP to re invent my childhood. I would hate to see Steam keep cancelling there kernel if they want to keep up with the digital age make Steam more Open Source and let people use it at their own risk that would be nice to have I will still keep using Steam on Linux I am losing all faith in Microsoft the only reason I use Windows is for games like World of Warcraft and to perform specific tasks.
I am posting from Linux right now. Linux Mint is just as user friendly as Windows, and while I prefer Windows 7 and Windows XP, Linux Mint is superior to Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Additionally, Proton means you can play most Windows games on Linux too. It is like two extra clicks in Steam. The Steam deck also uses Linux and Proton.

I used Windows 8 and 8.1 and 10 and am currently on 11. No idea where you got the idea otherwise.

I am guessing you quoted the wrong post with your reply.

Steam is a client, not a company. The company is Valve.

Steam will never be open source as it is a digital store front, made by Valve, as well as for DRM management.

If you want Linux as a main OS, you should be using Mint or something, especially if you don't know what you're doing. Be ready to Google a lot, or use ChatGPT (particularly with GPT4 for less hallucinations), it's a lifesaver for figuring out how to do what you want to do without wasting excess time Googling and reading stackoverflow. I've been using Linux for coding for 7 years now, I still ask AI/ lookup how to do stuff constantly.

Either way, go do some actual research into the different distros and figure out what one is for you. Steam forums is not a particularly great place to learn about this stuff, and if you're expecting to have people explain everything to you in a forum post you're gonna be very disappointed and have a not fun time.

If you want to learn Linux because you want to learn Linux, it might click. If you're just malding and using it out of some spite because you think a billion dollar corporation gives the slightest ♥♥♥♥, you'll probably bounce off within a week .
