Way off, the first game I started to notice a change was Delta Force 2.
I was a clan member at the time and very gradually the games started to get worse, insults from other clans, cheating accusations. etc.
The more popular it became the worse it got, same as most games I guess. Good and bad in every game but never make the mistake that it's only kids, some of these people are grown men, I use that term very loosely.
Fairly unpleasant isn't a term I'd use, nasty horrible individuals is closer to it, they seem to think it's ok to speak to people like garbage yet meet that same person in the street and they'd be nice and polite, the internet, free pass to treat people like something you stepped in.
Thankfully they are the minority depending on the game :)
No you cannot. As everyone knows, there are no females on the internet.
I wouldn't be surprised at this point with the stuff i've seen in online games.
As for the reason for toxicity. Some players don't understand that more than 1 approach can work. If you don't follow the exact forumula to win that they read up on, then they see you as a cyst, despite the fact that this usually implies they lack versatility.
And beyond that there is the real world influence. Gaming is an escape for, i dare to say, most. So not everyone thinks of it as "i'm a gamer, and part of the culture" as much as "♥♥♥♥ work, i need to frag ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥" Competetive games with short term matches are ideal for these kinds of gamers, who will likely only return to the one game, so there becomes a potency of people who don't and won't care about the other gamers, and are only there to compensate for ♥♥♥♥ in life.
The solution is to cherry pick good gamers, and build communities. Then you can bypass most other people.
I agree, dedicated private servers beat public servers any day of the week when it comes to keeping toxic players out.
I'll also add that I think everyone who visits forums and message boards has at least at some point been attacked and so it creates a defensiveness or almost vengefulness at times. There have been times someone posts something and I've looked for what I see as wrong and make sure to comment on that instead of something positive. Again, I've been part of the problem too, but trying to be honest about it. Myself I'm trying to work on being less like that.
Fair point. I love how long this discussion has been. Never expected it to be months long lol.
