Its mbps per default since the UI update a few weeks ago.
And yes, if you rather want MB/s just go into your Steam client settings under "DOWNLOADS" and turn off "display rate in bits per second".

Either is valid, and there is a setting.

I prefer MBps over Mbps. Speed is usually measured in bits, bandwidth is measured in bytes, it's a quasi convention that's been around for ages. They both can be used for either, there's a momentum behind bits being used in X cases and bytes being used in Y cases though.

Since we download games I'm surprised the download setting doesn't default to bytes though. But whatever, change it if you don't like it.

Because ISPs use mbps.

Don't those represent the same thing - the slash "/" denoting "per" ?

The real problem is... do they display megabit or mebibit

Yes.

But some people still type M(m)b/s and mean MB/s.

and then.. do they mean Mbit or Mibit - since decimal / metric standards are different from the IEC and JEDEC

Doesn't make too much difference at lower scale, but the difference increases exponentially

I guess they use Mbit/s as being 1,000,000 (1 million) bits per second for the mbps,
and MB/s as being 1,000,000 (1 million) bytes per second for MB/s

OP, learn to capitalize letters, please!

As OP has typed it, it's milibit.

mbps == mb/s == milibits per second

I think for MB/s, Valve uses the IEC power of two multiplier (even if they use the old deprecated notation - M instead of Mi), while for Mb/s they use the SI power of 10 multiplier. :lunar2019laughingpig:

Hard to make a post when you don't capitalize correctly anyway, OP.

The convention I'm aware of is

MB would be megabyte
Mb would be megabit

Of course the problem that that convention is it requires a precision users aren't aware of or are often lazy about.

It's an option in the download settings. Change it to your preference.

idk maybe the ISP pay valve to make it seems like your internet connection got faster, because it sure makes me think so before I see the unit
