First time seeing this steam scam

A friend on steam sent me a message saying, "sup, gift steam $50 balance for you, just claim it"

Attached to the message was a link to some weird website.

Report them for sending suspicious links, then block them and move on.

Yeah pretty common scam, you'd sign in to claim it and they'd steal your account. It's used on basically every website in the world

Phishing is not new. It's probably the most used scam.

I got one today, honestly, if it wasn't for the misspelled in the URL, I may be fooled... it actually looks genuine...

That is why being able to see the URL is a must for security.
Each domain name is unique for a reason. (though... e.e; in a very bad future, perhaps the internet may switch to UUID based web domains at this rate. You cannot see URLs with most browsers on the phone, nor when you scan the QR code (which often automatically opens the URL in the code) )

The name for this.... criminal activity is called 'phishing'
phishing involves setting up a fake website that appears genuine specifically, in order to trick the target.
