Just wondering, how do i get cool steam backgrounds for free?

That's how you get backgrounds. Craft a badge for a game, and you'll get a random background from that game. Or you can just buy a background from the market. Backgrounds aren't free.

It involves a lot of trading with items you've found and then trade them for cards you don't have for badges you haven't crafted.

Otherwise it's about spending money to buy cards and make badges.

They are. You don't need to pay a single cent to get badges. Yu can, sure, but you don't need to.
