What game making program would be the best?
Not sure if this is the right spot to ask this but I been very curious in making my own game. I do not have any actual skill in doing so but I am an artist and a writer. I have been playing around with Black Ink and some other painting programs and was thinking about using one of my upcoming stories as a stepping stone for a zelda style game with more of a photoshop style of graphics instead of the standard pixel style.

I've seen there is a few different programs that work well with someone like me who hasn't had the chance to go to school or learn on my own time on how to create games but there is a bunch. Is there anyone who has used any of these programs that could recommend something to me.

Thank you for your help and time. If you are curious, I do have my art/writing sites linked to my profile.

Winter's art site[www.facebook.com] or st-wint3r.tumblr.com
Winter's facebook[www.facebook.com]
Winter's other art site[wint3rki11.deviantart.com]
Winter's youtube
Winter's writing site[www.wattpad.com]

Here they are, decided that it would be easier just putting them here for the one's who want to look. The other art site is where I put my photos of models that I've worked with.

i think it really depends on what type of game your making , the problem your going to run into is that with you doing the graphical area of the game , is that most of those click and paste programs are not really "customizable" as far as graphics go or programming , it's more geared to make a simple game...you just have a bunch of options you can select when "designing / copy and pasting" something.

the best advice i can give you , is to look thru all the prgrams and see if theres something you can use , or maybe find someone thats knowledged in programming and can help you in that area , i wouldn't advice you to learn programming as that takes a while to master...it is possible though if your patient enough and don't want your game finished next week ;)

Thank you, I do have a friend who's going for his masters in that field but life got in the way and any projects we had in he future is basically put on hold for a unknown amount of time. If i only have the option of the pixel type stuff then maybe i can make it work, i was just hoping to do my own thing while still having that zelda like feel.

:Teddy_talk: To begin with, is this a passing interest or do you have an actual commitment though thick and thin to complete this "game"
As for myself, if I have an interest in something, I ask myself "- am I serious or, is this a novelty that will wear off in say, in a couple of days"
A good indicator for me, is I'll look into my past of stuff I've done or tried to do, like different projects and ideas and see if I "completed" most or some of these interests. Instead of pondering about this, I actually write down all the stuff I did or tried to do.

-- I would begin by writing down or, drawing my game ideas on paper.
What are my general ideas and concepts? What is the theme? Is it racing, zombies, Zelda-ish, etc,. What is the type of game I am envisioning? FPS, top-down, MMO, etc,.
Is there a story or backstory? What type of art can I do? Game colors and contras; bright, neutral or dark?

:Teddy_talk: It is so helpful to know something about some basic programming, if you can, check out some topics and even books on computer sciences, such as "programming for dummies" "game design for beginners" and this requires said commitment or if this feeling is a passing interest.
I notice every once in a while on these discussions, there is an occasional complaints "Why are there so many trash games on Steam?" "There's too much amateur shovel-ware on Steam!" ...so quality commitment is important and oh, just as important - artistic talent.

I would suggest looking around Steams Greenlight Games Check out what others are doing.

I completely agree with you and I agree that this must be said in discussions like this. I also am annoyed by all the trash games on steam but in the interest of quality in both my work and my love for steam, making a peice of garbage is not my goal. Like I said, I am an artist and a writer. I have finished one book (not published) and am currently working on my second book which I have hopes to get published. At one point I was working with a friend on a game and had plans in the future on working on a game with one of my stories but things just didn't pan out. So just because I've always had a the interest in games and always wanted to see one of my works come to life, I've decided to take it all on myself. I understand it will be a hard and long road and that it may take me years to finish. I also understand at the end of the road that this project of mine might not work out and all those hours spent was for nothing. Being an artist though, I know how to salvage bad work for better and so if this project of mine fails, I can pick up the pieces in hopes to make something better.

Thank you for your time and help.
For relatively simple projects, tools like Game Maker and RPG Maker may suffice. For more complex projects, you may need to do custom scripting within these tools.

Meanwhile, why not take this chance to learn some programming? Here's a free resource, a book written specifically for learning Python to make games: https://inventwithpython.com/

Thank you, I've looked into these programs before just didn't know which one would be better. My original plan was to just go with one of these programs at first and maybe down the line work more on the programming side. I don't expect to get really far into programming my own games, I already have a lot on my plate. I do hope to learn enough that I could at least have a interesting old school game with some type of unique style and great story with relatable characters.

Yes, for 2D games use Game Maker. It has a really simple interface that you can get the hang of in a matter of time.

Alright, thank you for your help!
If you have a very specific vision of your game, there is little way around doing it from scratch. Stuff like Game Maker and RPG Maker force you into a specific style of game which is very difficult and hack-y to break. Same goes for many engines. I'll never get acustomed to the way Unity handles things for example.

If you're looking into 2D games, you might want to give Construct 2[www.scirra.com] a chance. Looks complicated at first, but there are very well written tutorials for it and you don't need much coding skills in the beginning.

sweet, thank you. I remember seeing that one and was wondering if it was any good.
Well i grabbed both the free versions to test them both out. Hopefully there isn't a time restrictions on them because it might take me awhile to figure out what i like and what they have that'll be easy enough for me yet still do all the things i need it too.
So, let's say, someone who knows how to read html code (but not write it) and has already a full story(genre:fantasy) that wants to make into a game, has the following:

Source Filmmaker
Construct 2 Free
Blender 2.77
Fuse
Game Guru (all packs except Sci-fi)

What's the next step?

Well first I would have to make sure i knew how each program worked and what for. This way I know what is the next step of what i need to work on after story boarding and character design. Once I have a general idea of where my story will start and end, and I know my characters and locations, I guess I would start painting my locations and then characters. Once I get my objects that I'll use... I guess after that I'll be doing a lot of reading and researching lol. I do have a few friends I could ask to help me if I really do get stumped.

Fiddle around with the programs, acknowledge that you'll never be able to pull it off, sit in a corner and cry.

Then there are two ways:
- Pull yourself together, invest your time into learning and pull off something decent or
- Watch a lot of YouTube tutorials, hack something together which vaguely resembles your initial idea and churn it out.

While making games has become easier than ever, making decent games is still a lot of hard work and will require time and experience. That's why you should start small and not with a 100h fantasy epic RPG.

Well def the first one will happen but hopefully the second happens as well lol. and i know better then to make a crazy rpg that 100hrs or so. I have a really small game in mind to start out.
