Multiplayer online TBS recommendations?
I'm looking for turn-based strategy game recommendations to play with irl friends of mine.

We played Master of Orion and Galactic Civilizations back in the day (I see GCIII is coming up), as well as some other TBS games, but haven't really followed the genre for the past fifteen (!) years.

Requirements:
- Must support at least 6, preferably 10 players
- Asynchronous online gameplay: we're around the world and in different timezones, so the game must be playable when others are not connected to each other or a server
- Preferably no WWII
- Absolutely no F2P, but truly free is fine
- PC only
