Definitely a forever game.
Forever a frustration joy
Rimworld is a very open game with different settings, biomes, mods etc. And if you buy the newest expansion it has a ton of ideologies that can affect how your colonists react and interact with other groups.
Playable pretty much indefinitely because it already comes out of the box with a huge portion of gamemodes. Aside from that there is a lot of community made content ranging from textures over maps way through to custom gamemodes. Of course you can create your own content as well.
The amount of servers is immense and the playercount stays pretty stable so you will never be alone even if you don't have friends to play with.

A space game better then some space games these days.
Until you get frozen with the thought that you have so much to play, that you have nothing to play.
Those big games require a certain amount of attention and commitment, and without both of those things they're not worth even starting. I love them, but because of this my backlog will take more time than I have left in my life, even if I manage to hit 100 years old.
After spending over 130 hours playing it on Steam, I picked it up on sale at GOG and started with a clean slate. Doing missions with limited power ups, having to reacquire items, can be very challenging.
10 hours in on GOG and it's like playing it for the first time. I did the same thing with Stardew Valley and quickly spent over 30 hours from scratch.
