Where are the Open World Driving/Racing games?

I did a search for them and although several popped up, because those were the tags put on them, they were not what I was looking for. I am particularly interested in games like Vette! and Midtown Madness. And although it would be nice if those games were both on Steam and ran for modern machines, at least other games in the same vein would be appreciated. But I do not see much of anything to those two games or category. Is the genre no longer wanted?

The new hot wheels Unleashed game looks stupidly fun but it is pretty pricey as it's just come out. I don't know whether that would be anything like what you are looking for but bunch of streamers playing it could show you.

Thank you for this, but they are not really what I am looking for. At least per the videos, they seem to be racing in ghost towns. No one else is on the road, except maybe Burnout and to be quite honest I have never been a fan of that series. That and none of the games have pedestrians you can actually run over or really play the game as if you were actually driving a car for a Sunday drive to enjoy the sights or to commute. It is all racing and to the extreme. Not really an open world in my opinion.

If that's what you want to do: Saints Row and the Just Cause games are for you....

Sadly, there ain't many games like this for whatever reason.

All I know of are the older games - The Crew 1 and 2, Test Drive Unlimited 1 and 2 (which aren't exactly very good in the nature of racing as their handling is just crap and there's little difference between cars).

There's also the older Burnout Paradise, Euro Truck Simlator and American Truck Simulator.

The two that haven't been mentioned thus far I thoroughly recommend.

Beam NG Drive - that game is a sandbox is totalis. It's whole schitkc is physics. See how you can destroy a car and how it handles. But while it is a free for all there's some truly great user content and massive open areas to explore and play around in, or set your own challenges and races.

The only downoside being it's still a work in progress and it doesn't have anything like a career mode or campaign.


Then there's Spintires Mudrunner. Not a racing game in the slightest but it is a fairly open world or map for each level. It's endearing because the whoel schitick of this one is to get through mud. There's ahost of vehicles on the map and you have to get to A, pick up your load, and take it to B, while maybe going to C to refuel. You choose what to use and go accordingly. You may even need to jump to a small rescue vehicle to drag your upturned lorry out of a ditch.
