Good horror games that are not focused on jump scares
But rather atmospheric horror, psychological horror, etc.. Jump scares are fine I guess, but when the game is focused on it, it becomes predictable and just does not work for me.

so yeah, suggest some stuff for me! Getting some ideas for stuff to play as we get closer to.. what was it again? Oh yeah. Getting some ideas for stuff to play as we get closer to Thanksgiving.

Amnesia(and included mod Justine, and its sequel)
Left 4 Dead 1 and 2 have that AI director
Cry Of Fear though... once you figure out what your supposed to do. Not exactly jump scares but you can just hear horrible things moving about.
I'll give my few pence (as I can't stand the lazy jump scare style of horror games). However, if you truly want the best experiences for the games you're after, you may have to look on other platforms.

Fatal Frame is in my opinion ,THE best horror game series made. The first two particularly (on PS2 and original Xbox and the second on Wii). They REALLY stand up well today both in looks and play. Think Resident Evil style of play - exploration, light puzzling and so on.

The setting is what really sells it though - spooky Japanese abandoned properties or villages with dark secrets. Effects much like The Ring - static, and glitchy effects abound. You have to kill the ghosts that pop up with your funky camera. It's truly brilliant and so very well paced.

Also, there's the first 3 Silent Hill games. Granted 2 and 3 are available on PC under the Collection but they're not as good simply because Konami messed up their handling of the remaster. Better to track down the originals, or again, go to PS1 and PS2 (or original Xbox).

Obscure 1 and 2 are two overlooked games too much in the same style of gameplay. Setting is a group of teens in a shady school setting. Some really nice tochlight effects in this that werwe a bit ahead of its time.

Amnesia for PC is still agreat game and iirc the colelction of games under the Amnesia Collection is relatively cheap and worth getting.

I know what you're thinking - "I play PC, why would I want a PS2"? You don't , that's your decision. All I'm doing is saying there's some truly top notch games that are only available there, so you might want to consider getting one in the future, especially as PS2s are still cheap as chips at the moment (you can pick up a clean working model for under $50).

I have played all the games you mentioned :)

Silent Hill franchise is good. Fatal Frame is good too. In fact, we're getting a new FF game for Steam soon.

As for Obscure, those are on Steam too. Never could get into them. They try too hard to be like Resident Evil/AitD but come up short.
Alien Isolation.
F.E.A.R.
Alien Isolation and F.E.A.R. are both good.

Any others?

Specifically maybe some that are not on the well known spectrum?
Soma is great and shouldn't have more than maybe one jump scare at one point. It points good questions about humanity and machines and also puts in moral dilemmas.
It's about to get a remaster, but I MEGA MEGA HYPER recommend you play Alan Wake and Alan Wake's American Nightmare
Minecraft is definitely a horror game set in a death world (or three death worlds) for the unprepared.

Wasn't aware of Obscure being on here. I can understand your comment though. I don't hold them in as high regard as the others, but I rather mean they do offer good fodder for spooky playthroughs in October.

"In sound mind" uses jumpscares in rather tame way. Also a rather good game!
