Some people like using the PlayStation controller over an Xbox controller.
Others use a Logitech branded controller and I've seen a few gamers got a Nintendo GameCube controller to work for them to play most of their Steam games.
Plus, I've heard fighting games work better with a joystick pad over a controller.
I know of a few people use a Kensington trackball for most of their games.
Again, I believe "the best for you" depends on what you're using now, or what you're used to.
They run over Bluetooth (but proprietary dongles are available if you prefer those, in that case, no need for an S), supported by games natively and got some damn solid build quality (which I can't say as confidently about the Logitech alternatives after using them for a while).
