They never left. Neither did EA.
You can still purchase their back-catalogue. That's not leaving. Also Ubisoft recently released a game on Steam.
They just stopped releasing their new games on Steam on release. They might as well bring them here after some time.

Your beef is with epic and not uplay, so no reason not to buy the game on uplay. But to be honest here, your limiting your gaming enjoyment by solely sticking to steam tho.
It's not petty, if you enjoy playing games for achievements I would say that's a valid reason but I don't agree with the part about reviews tho.
