Trials of Mana
this year wasn't been as great as it should be
I tend to see the positives in anything like this, and I have wide tastes (I'll largely paly most of anything except beat em ups and fighters).
My favourite era was the PS2 era. So many great games were being turned out then. It was a massive hit rate.
2008 was a stellar year too. I read Edge magazine and their notoriously stingy scores meant that they've only ever given 10/10 a handful of times ever. Yet three games had this in 2008 within a short span of a couple of months - The Orange Box, Halo 3, and Super Mario Galaxy. These were just the pinnacle. There were MANY other great games that year.
BUt I suspect that ballooning costs have really started to show on the industry. It's obvious that publishers have become more and more risk averse so everything will start to seem like everything else, as they follow trends do doggedly.
But it's getting really tiring and I feel the sould is missing from loads of games now. It is rare to find a game that holds my attention long enough now. Yet, worried that I was perhaps finally going off gaming, I went back to older games I hadn't touched. Unboxed a load of old PS2 games and PS3 games, and nope, I was hooked.
I wish it were otherwise, but sadly there's nothing I can think of I'm much interested in.
There's only one that sits on my curiosity radar - Biofreak. God when that will come out, or if it ever will.
1) Wingspan
2) Tsuro - The Game of the Path
3) Root
3) Spirit Island
3) Sagrada
Honorable mention for C&C Remastered.
