Then there's, very similar to KF1, buyable weapons. Those are cool but similarly to KF1 more sidegrades than P2W. Unlike KF1, those can he shared hassle-free. In KF1, a DLC owner could buy such a weapon for a teammate while in KF2, everybody gets access when a DLC owner joins. Similar to KF1 if you want all the weapons, you'll have to pay extra. Can't say how much though.
KF2 is about as dark-sided as KF1, it's just that people love drama.
It is recommendable to just buy the base game, and ignore the whole market-thing, if you do not care about micro-transactions.

Hello!
The real price of the game (excluding cosmetics) is the 8.90+59.96
The 59.96 is from the DLC weapon bundles sold at 14.99, of which there are 4 right now but more are on the way so if you want to have all the content, expect to pay 14.99 every 4 months when they release new weapons. They do go on sale a few months after they are released but only by 50%.
It is worth noting that when a player joins a server, they share all their DLC weapons with everyone on that server, and these players have access to those weapons for the duration of the map, even if the player who has purchased the weapons leaves the server.
Selling DLC weapons was a heavily criticized move by the community who already supported the game via the purchase of cosmetic bundles or by purchasing cosmetic loot boxes.
Most of the cosmetics on these loot boxes are pure trash that only cheapen the look of the game, however, some weapon skins do look very cool and you can buy these easily from the Steam Marketplace (for as low as 0.03) but some of these items are stupidly expensive because of how rare they are.
The player skins and weapon skins featured in cosmetic bundles are, in my opinion, of much better quality and also go on sale once in a while.
To finalize I'd also like to point out that Killing Floor 2 remarkably improves on every aspect compared to the first Killing Floor. The gameplay, the visuals and the sound design have notoriously been improved to a AA quality and the gun animations are superb, and with over 30 official maps, there's a great game here for only 8.90. So I wholeheartedly recommend the base game and then get the DLC weapons you like on sale if you become heavily invested.
Any additional questions?
Edit: You can also unlock some cosmetics by playing the game but nothing that comes close to the payed stuff.
So far ... It seems that Tripwire does not want players to proceed in this way to obtain their items, indeed KF2 offers items for sale directly in-game (shop ingame) which allows them to bypass commissions to players and Steam. Here are some changes TW has made in this regard:
- If an item becomes VERY popular / profitable on the SCM, the ingame shop will offer these items often much cheaper which generates a risk for those who have placed offers to buy on the SCM and makes it difficult to make a profit with the items of KF2. A lack of consideration on the part of TW ...
- Previously there were only a few types of items that were EXCLUSIVE to the ingame shop and tagged unmarketable and therefore impossible to make profit with (new characters, special outfits, special effects), all creations of the game devs, except fault. But lately even the new skins created by the community are only accessible on shop ingame.
In addition, weapon DLCs are no longer free, which still adds something for which we spend without hope of being able to resell it later ...
- Previously we could buy event items (at the end of each event they became salable), but lately we can only get these items either by using tickets or by buying the full pack on the ingame shop.
So there you go, they are doing everything they can to push to spend on the ingame shop, which is not in the interests of the consumer / player in my opinion.
The cost of the weapons (if you want them all) can easily reach a total you’d expect to pay for a normal AAA release. Though a tip, there are sales when updates go officially live where you can grab them for a neat discount. Which is nice because none of the weapons are worth the full asking price.
If you want to access all the content in the game (read: weapons), you'll need to:
- Buy Deluxe edition for the Zweihander sword for Berserker
- Buy Road Redemption for Road Redeemer (baseball bat with metal bits) for Berserker
- Get weapon DLCs either through direct purchase through in-game store, or getting them from other players through trading
The complete breakdown of how much weapon DLCs cost goes like this:
While not on sale, 1 weapon costs 10 bucks, or a pack of 2 weapons (that both were released in the same update) costs 15 bucks. While on sale, all old weapons go for 50% off, which cuts down the price to 5 bucks for 1 weapon, or 7.5 bucks for a pack of 2, all new weapons (released in the same update during which the sale is happening) get a 25% off discount, which cuts down the price to 7.5 bucks for 1 new weapon, or ~12 bucks for a pack of 2.
Here's the list of all DLC weapon packs, as well for which class they go. Single weapon means it's only sold seperately because it was the only DLC weapon introduced in an update:
- Ion Thruster + Rhino revolver (Berserker and Gunslinger)
- Mosin Nagant + Riot Shield Glock18 (Sharpshooter and SWAT)
- Compound Bow (Sharpshooter)
- Glock18 pistol + Blunderbuss (Gunslinger and Demolitionist / Support crossperk)
- Minigun + Mine Reconstructor (Commando and Medic)
- (Upcoming) Frost Fang shotgun (Support / Berserker crossperk)
That puts you at 4 weapon bundles + 2 standalone weapons (one of which is going to be new and cost 7.5 bucks), which means all DLCs during a sale cost 42,5 bucks (4 bundles for 7.5 bucks, one old standalone for 5 bucks and one new standalone for 7.5 bucks) if you are going to buy them during the sale that will happen when the upcoming Christmas update releases
Do keep in mind that the weapon DLC packs are tradeable, meaning people can (and will) want to trade for them. Usual price for any old weapon DLC is 2 MannCo TF2 keys, while a new weapon costs 3 MannCo TF2 keys.
The DLC weapons in KF2 are more of a reskin/cosmetic addition than a gameplay addition. They do add some interesting things like a bayonet on the mosin or the shield+glock combo, but they are completely optional and I would even say redundant. You can enjoy the base game without any further payment. They dont change the game in any way except what you see on screen and maybe a bit how you play, nothing more.
The full game is more than enough. You can buy weapon and character skins on the Steam Marketplace, but it's completely optional with no gameplay impact whatsoever. The money you dish out for the base game brings you 99.9% of content with a -+0.1% margin of error.
entire marketing team, that still didn't realized, how to sell things right. They failed selling cosmetics and bam, they're selling DLC weapons, because their strategy didn't worked out well and they need to force people to buy something, something that have 0 effort in modeling/animating, seriously i won't give a 5$ for those weapons made with low effort. It's not a matter of someone's having a big wallet, it's a matter of someone who is respecting your own wallet.
